Business Model You: A One-Page Method For Reinventing Your Career Paperback – Illustrated, March 27, 2012
by Tim Clark (Author), Alexander Osterwalder (Author), Yves Pigneur (Author)
4.6 out of 5 stars
A single-page guide to transform your career and yourself
The bestselling global title business Model Generation introduced a unique way to visually summarize and brainstorm every business or product idea on one sheet of paper. Business Model You employs the same efficient single-page tool to show readers to create "personal business models," which show how your skills can be adjusted to the evolving market conditions to open up new, more fulfilling life, career and career possibilities. Written by the same team who invented Business Model Generation This book is built on Business Model Canvas, a Business Model Canvas methodology, that has rapidly become the leading business model description technique and innovation strategy.
This book teaches users how:
Learn about business model thinking and sketch their current personal business model
Know what is the significance of their talents in the market and establish the purpose of their work
Develop a vision for transformation
Create a personal business model that is in line to that vision. Then, the most important thing is to try out and implement the new business model
If you use the tool on one page from Business Model You and you build an innovative business model that will change your professional and personal life.

I'm a business consultant and executive coach, and I have to tell you that I like this book. But what I really like is the approach in the book. It is simple, straightforward and well-thought out. More importantly, it is impactful. It won't tell you what your purpose is, nor what your business model should be. Nothing and no one can actually do that for you. But it is an excellent process of reflection and mapping that will very likely lead you to insights and clarity. And, if you take your courage in both hands and act on that, then more and more insights and clarity will come. I will be recommending this to clients in situations where I feel a process like this may help them, and so I am also recommending it to you if the time is ripe for you to reflect, reframe and move forward in a different way. And if you are a procrastinator, then I will also recommend the book The War of Art. It is an excellent complement to this, showing us what resistance and procrastination are, and how to overcome it.

Great action plan for creating your personal business model

I enjoyed Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur's "Business Model Generation." It gave me a process to develop a visual for how the programs I lead work that I can easily share with stakeholders across my organization. So when this book came out, I bought it immediately. Now, I buy a lot of business books and I don't always finish reading them. This one I read in one sitting on a Saturday morning over my coffee. I couldn't put it down. I appreciate the way it leads you through the development of your personal business model and the personal examples shared by others and I am now using it to work my way through the development of my own one-pager (using lots of scratch paper along the way). If you are looking for a framework to capture your career plan and a process for putting it together, this book is a great guide.

Like it's cousin, "Business Model You" asks you to look at your career as a canvas of 9 parts. This isn't a cookie cutter model, though. The canvas takes you through 9 parts of a business model that you get to paint. Painting and canvas aren't loose metaphors here, you can actually paint on the canvas using sticky notes and pictures. For example, key activities is one of the parts. What do you do? Draw a wrench and a beetle, because you fix software bugs, or write down fix software bugs. The pictures make it more real and tell a better story. That's what makes painting on the canvas so good, you can tell a better story of what you do, who you do it for, who helps you, who gets benefitted by it, how much it costs, how much you take in. Highly enjoyable. Great stories. Well worth the time.

A must-read for those who want to tweak or change their career

I wish this book had been around early on in my career, or maybe even before I went to college! It is very useful to help you figure out what you really want to do or should be doing, using the Business Model Canvas from the book "Business Model Generation" (which is a must-read for anyone serious about working in a business/corporation or starting a business, in my opinion).
Aside from the content itself, I love the design and layout of the book, and it is a pleasure to read. I also love the fact that hundreds of people from all over the world contributed to the creation of this book.

I love when people can simplify the complex - Tim Clark has done that with this book. The book is really a career coach in a book by giving you a set of tools for self discovery and aligning your passions and talents into how you make your living and spend your time purposefully. Plus it's fun and colorful. Everyone that I have shared or given the book to enjoys even flipping through the pages.
Tim takes the 9 box framework called the Business Model Canvas and applies it to your life and work in Your Personal Canvas and then provides a series of exercises that enable the process to unfold. You get to do exercises without feeling like you have exercising. And the results yield valuable insight to help you live a more integrated life that is fulfilling.

I rated this 5 stars because this is an interesting new way to look at one's career and it gives you the tools to try and figure things out and get them together and make a solid plan for what you want to do by asking questions. Maybe that's how my brain works but I ask questions to get to where I want to be and figure out what things I want to do. This to me is a great way to try and find solutions and the book provides the questions you should ask yourself and the answers that you should look for.

Again, the authors have successfully managed to produce a great framework for everyone to use! The Personal Business Model Canvas is a great tool that helped me better understand where I should focus my time and resources. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in surpassing their current self and achieve their goals.

Business Model You has great insights and tools as to how to create a business plan for yourself. I'm finding that many High School students are disenfranchised with the educational system; going to college, accumulating debt without much prospect of a well-paying job at end of it, is looking less and less attractive! I'm working on a personalized student learning model for students driven through interests and passions that can be linked to career explorations plus opportunities for creativity and innovation leading to... as the BMY exalts....an enterprise that can earn a livelihood! We need to create stepping stone experiences so young people can transition into being successful financially stable adults, have hope for their future and act for the greater good of the planet! This book is a great easy step-by-step to create a "canvas" for a new livelihood.... I'm looking forward to using it with students...

I highly recommend this book given its step by step approach and also the mix of simplicity and complexity in the framework.
