DAVE HOLLIS
Built Through Courage: Face Your Fears to Live the Life You Were Meant For
Audible Audiobook – Unabridged
Dave Hollis (Author, Narrator), HarperCollins Leadership (Publisher)
4.6 out of 5 stars
Author read by the author.
New York Times best-selling author Dave Hollis knows what it is like to realize that you've been navigating off the path of someone else. He's taken charge of his future and life and is eager to share the lessons that he's learned with others who face similar challenges.
Dave Hollis was recently confronted by the fact that his life was a relic of what others wanted for him. After having to face a highly-publicized personal crisis in the midst of a global pandemic, and navigating the fun but a bit shaky challenges of being the sole dad to four children and a grandchild, he was called upon to be the leader of his own life and is eager to teach others to live their lives the same way.
Created to be used in Courage will assist you:
Examine the values, stories, and beliefs that you ascribe yourself to, and determine once and for all if they're worthy of credibility or whether it's time to end the bait.
Implement fundamental routines and habits that are specific to your situation that will inundate your day-to-day life with the sameness, flexibility and authenticity.
If necessary, identify and alter your goals to make sure they are not unclear, do not have any other meaning and don't depend on the immediate outcome.
Consider failure to be the greatest source of knowledge and assist to reframe it as a necessity to your own personal progress and development.
Many, many more.
The Built for Courage gleans wisdom from a variety of sources as well as the personal experience from Dave himself, to guide you to where you're meant to be, and to become the person you're intended to become, regardless of the obstacles that are holding you from your goals.

Real life examples to support everyone in developing a bit more courage

I’ll start by saying that I don’t know Dave Hollis. Nor do I know any of the people who have left reviews here. But, as a psychologist, I do understand patterns of human behavior. When I see a series of negative reviews (like those left here) it gives me pause.
Full disclosure - I haven’t read the entire book. I purchased it as a pre-order, after hearing a talk Dave gave several months ago, and received it yesterday morning. I’ve only read the first 50ish pages thus far, but it’s abundantly clear that the reviewers leaving scathing remarks are not commenting on the book itself. They must have some other bone-to-pick with this author; one that likely reflects some unexamined issues in their own lives. To come onto a platform like Amazon during an author’s book launch and leave reviews like this says much more about the reviewer than the book or the author.
We each have our own opinions about the books we read. There’s no book that pleases everyone, and a spectrum of reviews is to be expected. But when a person (or in this case a group of people) takes it upon themself to publicly denigrate an author and their work, it’s clear there is some ulterior motive underlying that behavior. If you read it and didn’t enjoy it, that’s legitimate. Leave a star rating or don’t. Move on to a book you may find more beneficial. No need to tear an author down in the process, regardless of what you think about the work they produced. The famous “man in the arena” Roosevelt quote comes to mind here. It’s easy to write a scathing comment about something someone else has created. But have you been willing to produce anything of your own and to risk putting it out into the world for public consumption? If not, your critiques (and certainly your attacks) are irrelevant.
Here’s what I can honestly say about the book thus far. It’s clearly written with many illustrations that those who appreciate visual examples will enjoy. It focuses on some basic foundations of personal development, with the author’s personal life experiences used to illustrate them in action. There are journal prompts to support the reader in implementing the ideas. It’s a solid book for anyone getting started in the world of personal growth and development, and for those who have been engaged in this work for some time but want a refresher and perhaps some helpful new examples and applications. If you’ve heard the author speak and found him relatable, you’ll likely enjoy and benefit from this book.
Kudos to this author, and all the rest, who are courageous enough to not only create something, but to risk putting it out into the world for the rest of us.

Entertaining and actionable book

Dave has a wonderful way of turning great stories into a lessons on life. I enjoyed the nautical theme that weaves itsway through the entire book. It is also an actionable book, there are exercises and prompts to apply Dave's advice to your own situations. If you get the audible, be sure to download the PDF for a mini workbook. I enjoyed hearing Dave tell his own story on the audio book. I look forward to receiving my hard copy so I can really dig into the Journaling and exercises.

A fantastic roadmap for those ready to do the work

This book serves as a helpful aid for those who have already decided to cultivate courage in their lives. In the pages between helpful journal prompts and exercises, Mr Dave Hollis shares pieces of his authentic self to the benefit of the reader.
If you’re looking for a vulnerable, exposing sob story of divorce, struggle and misery - this is not that book. Dave has chosen not to live in his suffering and not to be the victim during arguably the toughest year of his life. And in this book, he shares why he makes that choice and how we can forge our own paths through the difficult times life throws at us all.
Find the courage to not just read this book, but do so with an open, receiving mind and heart. Learn what you can from it, take away what has meaning for you and accept the rest for what it is - one man’s authentic journey to build courage.

Vulnerable, relatable and practical
Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2021
The stories are relatable as long as you approach this book with an open mind and looking to truly make progress in your journey. I love Dave’s vulnerability to share the hard times in such a way that I felt seen. The practicality of the journal questions and using this more as a journal or step by step process forced me to stop, think and answer some tough questions that I have been breezing through life and not facing. Well done Dave! Thanks for making this lost ship find her way!

I appreciate your honesty Dave. I’ve followed your journey for years and I have met you a few times at conferences. You have always been kind in your message and honest in your struggles. You actively participate in learning about your own privilege and listen to truly hear what other humans paths are and how their individual story has impacted them. You then do what you can to
better yourself in order to help in the unique ways that YOU can. Cheers to your second book! Cheers to the haters pushing you to continuously keep creating the best version of you and in doing so, making the lives of others breathe easier because you keep showing up.

I didn't know Dave's name before his divorce and frankly, barely knew Rachel's name. I've followed him, though, since the announcement in People and have found his vulnerability and transparency to be remarkable and courageous. I rarely leave book reviews, but feel this one deserves a comment. Several have left disparaging reviews from a place of clear contempt for humankind and not objectivity around someone's writing. One particular note is someone who wrote that Dave can't possibly be speaking from a place of true courage from his "million dollar patio of peace." Wow, really? So, his nice home erases his humanity? Quite the contrary, in my opinion. He could use his place of (assumed - do any of you have access to his financial statements?) financial security as a reason or excuse to not grow or rise above everything happening internally (his self described demons). Instead, left with the option to do nothing or be nothing, he's made the tougher choice to dig deep, heal, grow and be all he can be as a man. I daresay that's 10,000,000 times more than most of the men (or women) criticizing him have ever done themselves. Dave, you're doing great, I enjoy watching you be your best you, I find your work courageous and I've thoroughly appreciated your work - both the words written on the pages as well as the man and the struggle written between the lines. 'To your next book!

I read this book slowly so I could fully digest the message. In no time at all I was writing down parts of it to remember for later. It’s difficult in life to “get motivated” and this book is my catalyst. Highly recommend following the author on social channels for more positive content and growth. Goodness knows the world needs more of that. ❤️

Dave reminds me that you that self work gets you to the destination you desire. I really love the journal prompts, and plan to reflect and dive deep with these. There are activities to deepen your process, and my favorite an index!
Dave is vulnerable and claims his faults and openly admits he is doing the work beside you.
Loved it. Hubby will read it next and together we will do the work.
