Instead of writing a review, I will share a letter I wrote the author about a year ago, which he nicely responded to. Here's the text of my letter:
"Dear Noah,
I am writing to let you know what an amazing effect your afformations have had on me since I discovered them a few weeks ago.
Some brief backstory on me: I have suffered from depression on and off over the past several years, and I have been on and off antidepressants during that time.
For a few years in the middle of that, though, I used affirmations to great effect and was as happy as I had ever felt in my life. However, the affirmations took a herculean amount of effort to be effective: almost constant repetition for weeks at a time before I could significantly alter my deepest beliefs and self-image. As you point out, though, affirmations do work sometimes for some people, and they brought me a level of consistent happiness that I had never experienced before.
About two years ago, though, that happiness faded; and I have since tried in vain to recapture it. Try as I might - even with antidepressants - I was unable to alter my bleak view of the world around me, and, even worse, of myself. I tried to use affirmations, but they bounced off of my subconscious like rubber bullets off of a tank. I could not change my morose view of myself and of life. I smiled here and there when great things happened to me, but the smile never stuck around for long.
A few weeks ago, I was browsing the self-improvement section at the bookstore, searching for anything that might help make me happier and more successful than I have felt over the past few years. I saw your book Afformations and read a few pages. Excited, I bought the book right away and finished it in two days. Along the way, I highlighted dozens of passages, and then I went back and reread those passages.
Everything you said made sense, so I tested it out. I wrote out afformations pertaining to every area of my life that I wanted to improve, and then I read them and did my best to absorb them as truthful.
I barely even had to try. The unique phrasing of the afformations allowed the ideas to go straight to my subconscious and immediately stick. For the first time ever, I believed positive statements about myself and my future without having to sledgehammer them into my brain and hope for the best.
The most astounding change resulted from my afformations regarding happiness. I repeated them, and suddenly I actually felt happy: not on the surface, but from the inside outward, in a way that I had not experienced in years. Just one recitation of my afformations for happiness brings on an almost scarily strong burst of good feelings, as though my subconscious is immediately confirming: "Yes - I agree - you are happy".
Even better, with some repetition, it has stuck, and I have spent the last several days feeling mentally light and happy almost without interruption. I have been walking around my city feeling happy and excited and marveling at the beauty of the world around me. I have found myself smiling without even trying to - smiling so widely it has almost hurt! - and the smiles stick around long after any initial stimulus has faded.
Noah, I had been truly afraid that I would never experience this feeling again, and even if the effect goes away (though I don't believe it will), I am just so incredibly grateful for having experienced it again after so long. It has been like seeing the sun shine after spending years underground.
Noah, thank you for sharing your amazing findings with the world. In just a few weeks, they have made me feel like a new person. I wish you and your family all the best in any future endeavors."

Great Way to Rethink Affirmations and Effect Changes to Your Life
Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2021
The idea of afformations (notice the spelling with an 'o' instead of an 'i') came to Noah one day while he was in the shower. He often calls this the Shower That Changed Everything. This ah-ha moment came to Noah when he had reached a low point in his life. He was broke. His dancing career was over at the old age of 23, his body giving out after just having danced for less than 10 years. Now, he was going back to school, living in a dormitory room so ginormous, he could reach out and touch both walls on opposite sides of the room just by putting out his arms. He wasn't even sure why he was going back to college. Except perhaps it was just something to do. At one point during this lowness, he even contemplated suicide.
In the Shower That Changed Everything, Noah came to the blunt realization that affirmations do not work for the majority of people. Affirmations are affirming statements, like, "I am healthy because I work out at the gym three times a week." Yet, the reality for the person saying this is maybe they are going only once a week. Or not at all. By saying these statements, the hope is to go to the gym three times a week and be healthy as a result. The problem is most of us do not believe these statements. The gurus insist that by repeating an affirmation over and over that one day we'll believe the statement, if even in the slightest. It's that tiniest belief that is the catalyst to effect the change we want.
Noah's realization is instead of making a statement, what if we turned this into a question: Why am I going to the gym three times a week? It's a question always asked with the word "why". In other words, you cannot just ask any old question and expect afformations to work. They have to be done a particular way to be effective. By asking this "why" question, we try to immediately come up with an answer. Our brains are wired to automatically do this. By restating the affirmation as an afformation (Noah's trademarked term), we now start asking questions. We seek ways to make what we want come true. In essence, we go from can't-doers to can-doers.
He also talks about the 4 methods we need to employ on a daily basis to make afformations work to our benefit. As a result, the rest of the book covers these methods.
1. Read them.
2. Say them out loud.
3. Write them out.
4. Listen to ourselves saying them. <== According to Noah, this is the most powerful method, hearing yourself in a recording saying an afformation.
His book also has numerous afformations, in case you're having troubles coming up with them yourself. I found some of these to be helpful, as I would have otherwise not thought of them myself. Like anything else out there in the self-improvement industry, this is but another tool to add to your toolbelt. You'll have to try it and see how well it works for you.
I do recommend this book, as I've found the practice of afforming daily to be helpful as I strive towards my own goals.

This Book Takes Your LOA Miles Further Along
Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2021
When I started reading this I could not believe that I had never heard of Noah St. John. As a Licensed Counselor, it makes sense to me that asking yourself questions as though you already had your wishes gets the brain figuring how to get there. In just 10 days I have become more comfortable with my goals and assured that I will get there.
I liked the examples of people using afformations. Especially the young lady who was frustrated and changed her affirmation and calmed down quickly. Using them not only will help you be comfortable with your goals but will make you more relaxed and peaceful. I hope to write another review when I achieve some of my current goals. This book is worth the money and a lot more than the redundant books on LOA and goal achievement.

I have a rather extensive collection of personal development resources from some of the biggest names in the field. Many of them have proven to be quite helpful. Right now, I have to put Noah St. John's book at the top of that list.
The bread and butter of most development resources involves changing our perspective on self and life. They teach us through hypnosis, NLP tricks and techniques, and personal affirmations to flip the coin from negative self talk toward positive self talk.
The problem for many of us is disbelief. We can repeat "I am rich!" till the cows come home, but if we really do not belief that, all that "positive affirmation" stuff simply won't turn the trick.
This is further compounded by the fact that most of us spend a great deal of time asking ourselves disempowering questions.
"Why is my life such a mess?" "Why do I never have enough money?" "Why am I poor?"
When we ask ourselves disempowering, negative questions...we get disempowering, negative answers.
Noah teaches us to ask empowering-positive questions:
"Why do I always seem to have it altogether?" "Why do I have enough money?" "Why am I rich?"
Even a person with no money in the bank or zero in their investment accounts can find reasons to feel and know they are rich!
Noah builds on this foundation and offering specific instructions on how to build a better life as you ask these types of empowering questions.
There is lots of talk about manifesting wealth, health, and happiness. Most of the time these types of conversations can seem to the uninitiated to be hocus-pocus, magic, now I am going to "win the lottery" types of things because the cash is just going to start flowing in. Noah makes clear that this is NOT what he is talking about. Rather, when you have a more positive view of your life and the world, you begin to see that it is flourishing with opportunity.
Maybe it is as simple as a "self-fulfilling prophecy." If you are set on seeing the worst, you'll find it. If you are conditioned on seeing the best, you'll likely find that, too. This book aims to help us see the better and the best...and in my opinion, it hits the mark.

DON'T READ THE NEGATIVE RATINGS OF OTHERS ON THIS BOOK
Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2014
I'm a big fan of self improvement and this book is one of the best I have ever read. This book was recommended to me about a year ago and when I looked it up on Amazon I read a negative review and it really turned me off. However, the concept of it which was explained to me by the person that recommended the book really stood out. So after thinking about it for so long I decided to give it a try. I'm kicking myself for not purchasing it a year ago. Yes this is a simple book, but the concept of afformations really worked for me and it worked immediately. I shared the concept with my husband and he used it. He is a big fan and he isn't a self improvement junkie like me. I would highly recommend it. I believe anyone can benefit from it! If you don't (which I would find hard to believe), you can pass it on to someone else. BY THE WAY THE PINK ONE IS FOR MARY KAY REPS, I ACCIDENTALLY ORDERED THAT ONE.

Affirmations have been around for as long as I can remember. Noah explains why they often don't work and how to rework your self talk into the form of questions that actually set your mind to work in a different way, commanding it to go to work answering questions at the subconscious level because your mind loves to solve problems. It's a lot of ramp up to finally get to the meat, but the background might be interesting so someone who hasn't studied much about how the mind works.
I gave my copy to a relative with weight issues and I feel she will benefit from having a way to deal with the "mental diet" along with the right foods. The good news is, once you get your afformations written, you can go on auto pilot and just keep reinforcing them to yourself with repetition. The more I wrote, the more came popping up.
I've put some to use already and it was interesting that once you start framing your challenges in this new way, it's very grounding. We'll see. Couldn't hurt, might help.

Why are solutions easy for me?
Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2013
I love this book because of St John's explanations of how our mind looks for solutions by asking the right questions rather than positive statements that , underneath the daily recitations, there is that "yeah, right" like it's not really true.
In applying the afformations different perspectives open up and things outside the box solutions seem be better solutions.
One recent example is about a project and going to a conference that could be helpful, all the while asking,"why is it so easy to fly to this conference? Why are my ideas valuable?" When I talked with a very kind consultant, he validated my ideas and added that it was my way of giving back. How liberating that feeling was!
The book had many examples of afformations so that it was extremely easy to make up personal ones.
I so appreciated learning this "technique", method, in dealing with issues long and short term.
Thank you, Noah, for taking showers!

Afformations - Do it or you'll screw it!
Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2013
Afformations Vs Affirmations. The clear winner is... Afformations.
For to long now the traditional and conventional methods of teaching in the self help and personal development world have been left unchallenged. Many people have been reading or listening to self help material for years with little or no real results. As Noah says "You can never solve a why to problem with a how to solution." In other words almost everything you have read up until now only gives you the how to. The end result is usually overwhelm and confusion.
In his book, Noah gives you a simple method to overcome the resistance within your subconscious mind to affirmations. By using afformations the resistance is diminished because you are in effect asking a question, not making a statement.
The choice is: you can continue with affirmations and spend the rest of your life waiting for them to be accepted. Or, you can use afformations and supercharge your results in record time.
As I said in the title... Do it or you'll screw it!

This Book Will Change Your Life
Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2014
Afformations are "why to" questions that bridge the belief gap we experience when using regular affirmations. That is, the gap between our "Current Perceived Reality" and our "New Desired Reality." At first, I thought I could make up my own and not need the book at all, but though I certainly can and do, Noah St. John provides hundreds of "why to" questions that open up possibilities I hadn't even considered and raises my vibration from the constant doubt in myself (and resultant guilt). His program offers coaching and other help to keep that vibration up. Use it or not, but this book will change your life. You are more than you think you are.

Noah St. John's book, The Book of Afformations: Discovering the Missing Piece to Abundant Health, Wealth, Love, and Happiness, is life-changing! This book is fun and easy to read, and yet it has such a powerful, life-altering message. I had been a believer in affirmations, but saw little result from saying affirmations. Then, I discovered Noah's book; wow, what a difference one letter can make! Noah brilliantly realized that, since our brains are wired to answer questions and solve problems, we should be asking questions instead of making statements. Affirmations, with an "i", is a process where one makes a positive statement about something we want, but, don't yet have - "I am rich". Problem with that is, since it is a desired goal to be rich, that means we are not at the present time. Therefore, when we say to ourselves a statement that is not currently true at the time, our subconscious mind says something like "not even" or "that is a lie". The exciting thing about Noah's method of asking questions, by using Afformations, with an "o", means that we are giving our brains a problem to solve or a question to answer. It goes to work, on a subconscious level, to find reasons that answer the question. Affirmations work on the conscious level, whereas Afformations work at the subconscious level.
Also, Noah's explanation of the "Belief Gap" is very enlightening. I whole-heartedly encourage everyone seeking a better life to get and read this book. It also makes a great gift! Thanks again, Noah, for sharing this awesome insight!

Very simple, clear directions, and REAL (not magic thinking) steps for getting what you want in life
Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2013
Thanks Noah for putting together such a practical, simple, and easy-to-read manual on how to make life into what you want it, fast!
The only caveat here is that people have to just be sure they understand there is effort on their part to make the changes happen in their lives they want to see- if you're a person of action anyway, Noah's book is a piece of cake. If you prefer to stay stuck in blaming others or the world around you, then this book won't make you as happy- it's not magical thinking, it requires effort on your part to live a great life. The nice thing Noah has done is he's identified the clear and simple steps that any successful person knows are necessary to tread in order to get what you want. For folks who've had some confusing advice in the past, throw out the other books and just follow Noah's guide- it should take you there in a jiffy!
Here's to a great life, that we're all lucky enough to be living, and people like Noah who genuinely work to help make the world a better place all around us to live in!
Cheers!

One of the most spiritual books I've ever read
Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2013
Noah has put together a book and a system that really gets you asking the right questions of yourself and the effects are great. I am a Christian, go to church every week, Sunday School, Choir, the whole nine yards. I tell you this to say I can be skeptical of something that may smack of "New Age". However, I can tell you from personal experience that you will answer the Afformation questions in each section with what has been previously placed in your heart. For me, I read through the questions once on a surface level then go back through them and wait for what God places in my mind as an answer/response to the questions. For me, the answers come back as Scripture or lyrics to hymns. It's quite an amazing process.
I say all this to tell you that if you come at this text from a spiritual background, you will actually grow in your faith and will find no spiritual conflict therein. I look forward to the results I will achieve and the continued deepening of my spiritual journey by continuing to use The Book of Afformations!
