Justin Duncan Jeff Lerner Review
Meet Justin Duncan. Before joining ENTRE, he had been looking for a reason that could get him out of bed in the morning. Since his car accident, he hasn't been able to go back to his previous work. He tried different things but never felt they were his calling. He was attracted to ENTRE's entrepreneurial training and that's helping him find his calling.
Today’s guest on the Millionaire Secrets podcast is Anthony Trucks.
After having his NFL career cut short by injury at the age of 25, Anthony found himself catapulted into a world of depression and adversity.
But this wasn’t an unfamiliar place for him...
At the age of 3, Anthony was given into foster care. Growing up in a poor white family as a black child, he was the target of intense bullying and soon turned to petty crime in his teens.
Jail looked to be on the horizon.
But somehow, he turned things around and threw himself into his passion for football.
With some natural talent - and a lot of hard work - Anthony created an identity deep inside of a great football player.
He truly believed it - and the world would soon bend to that belief.
Fast-forward a few years from his teens, and Anthony was in the NFL.
But only for 3 years.
A combination of injuries started adding up. A shoulder injury was the final nail in his NFL coffin. And with that, Anthony had to start thinking of a life beyond football.
Again, he had to create a new identity for himself. And that’s where things get really interesting.
There’s more. So much more.
We talk about excuses. Namely, the moment Anthony realized he was making excuses in his own life for why he was a bad kid and would never be a success.
He introduces a mind-blowing analogy of a tree and its fruits as being the components of our lives.
Troublingly, most of us spend our time focused on the fruits. But it’s the tree and its roots that we should be tending.
Building on this, we talk about the concept of working quietly in the darkness so that your strengths can shine when you come into the light.
This is a deep interview. There’s so much gold here.
Anthony, as an ex-NFL superstar, reveals some really personal things to back up his concepts.
He’s shaped and re-shaped his identity many times in his life already, equipping him to help others to do the same.

The holy grail of management books
Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2017
I hardly write reviews for books, but this one is worth the read. I'm only half way through and she's brought so much clarity to my management failures and triumphs. I now understand the things that made me fail my first time around and successful my subsequent times around. And now that I have a framework to understand, I feel like I can build a team that reflects accordingly.
Good times. Thanks Kim. Is it too passive aggressive for me to give my current manager a copy of this book?

Some of the most useful management advice I have received
Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2019
I read very few business books, but Kim Scott spoke at our company and, intrigued, I bought Radical Candor. The insights and strategies it contains are among the very most helpful and practical I have ever read, and I use them almost daily -- at work and at home. Giving feedback is HARD!!! This book really helps, and has not only made me a more effective leader and coach to my team, but has also made me more open to feedback from others. I have bought a copy of the book for many of my direct reports and am always gratified when I observe/hear of them using Radical Candor with their own teams.

I've been at Google for 11+ years and much of what Kim talks about in the book resonated with me as a manager. This book as opposed to others I've read in the past has a ton of actionable guidance. I'm already looking for ways to apply many of the teachings from the book to my work. Especially the topics around Superstars and Rockstars hit home with me. Just today my team and I talked about how we could reward our Rockstars better. I also really like how Kim talks about the importance of being "centered" and how it's hard to be a good manager without being in a good place yourself.

A Valuable Book for Managers and Leaders
Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2019
I first heard about "Radical Candor" during my government agency's annual training conference, a conference that included a workshop based upon "Radical Candor" led by our HR director. While I hadn't heard of the book, I fell in love with the ideas behind it and upon my return home set out to pick up the book for myself. "Radical Candor" has easily become one of my favorite books of the past year, a terrific option for those who are challenged by difficult conversations and who want to grow in leadership.
While "Radical Candor" is likely most applicable to those in management or leadership positions, I've found the book really has been of tremendous benefit in my personal life. Within weeks of reading the book, I found myself in a challenging situation dealing with a healthcare provider and took much of what I learned from the book to resolve the situation positively and to work through a potentially negative situation. I displayed a side of myself I didn't really know and was rather awestruck by the positive results.
Since reading the book, I've actually been promoted into a supervisory position and am now seeing the ways in which the book complements my existing leadership skills and management style. Truly, "Radical Candor" remains one of my favorite books from the past year and I've seen positive growth both personally and professionally resulting from author Kim Scott's intelligent, informed and sensitively written guidance.

The concepts and information in the book are applicable across sectors
Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2018
I work in government and our management team read the book together. While not everything translates from the tech world to government, most of the concepts and information in the book are applicable across sectors. Radical Candor is one of the most helpful books on management I have read. Not only is the theoretical model (caring personally while providing critical feedback) incredibly helpful, but there are dozens of practical suggestions and tips on everything from 1-1 meetings to successfully managing large projects. This book really does lay out a framework to allow you and your staff to do the best work of your lives.

This book will help you with human relations whether you are a boss or not!
Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2019
The first half of this book should be required reading for anyone who interacts with other human beings and wants to do a more effective job of those interactions. Since RELATIONSHIPS ARE THE KEY TO SUCCESS IN EVERY HUMAN ENDEAVOR, this book challenges us to rethink how we relate and how it's working for us. Do we practice ruinous empathy, obnoxious aggression, or manipulative insincerity? Then Radical Candor--caring personally and communicating directly--can help us improve the way we deal with others. The book repeatedly reminds us that we are humans dealing with other humans who have the same drives and feelings--and that we owe it to one another to be kind as well as clear if we're going to maintain and improve. Read it and then Try it. It takes time and patience to build the kind of relationship that respects others while giving them honest feedback.

So, I’m not a bitch, after all.
Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2020
Finally, a book for the demographic that finds sugar-coating responses and walking on eggshells only leave you nauseated and uncomfortable. Candor may not be embraced by the majority in business culture, but it’s refreshing to know that you’re not alone in a world that often caters to the tell-me-what-I-want-to-hear crowd. All too often being direct is misconstrued as dictatorial or even bitchy. I got this to contribute to a book review team at work and it was absolutely great discussion material. Let’s quit wasting time and have some meaningful discussion with class, purpose and candor.

I read a ridiculous number of business books, but only about 1 in 20 is something that really blows your mind with its approach. This is one of those books. Kim Scott does an excellent job of addressing one of the most complex issues in any size business. She deprograms you of the typical communication problems with subordinates and reprograms you effectively to think about how to accomplish the best outcome for all parties involved. She taught me that negative feedback doesn't have to be "bad" feedback; instead, it can be an opportunity to take everyone to the next level and improve outcomes all around. Would highly recommend.

I'm eager to roll this out at our small company. Most of the practices outlined in this book were very familiar to me, having had solid managers over the past 20 years in the software industry. Yet another handful were new, novel, and complementary to what I've found works for most engineering teams. Kim does a solid job of rolling all of this into a concise bundle and then dedicates the last few chapters to how one can practically apply the concepts in the book to achieve large-scale people wins. Absolutely worth reading, regardless of your experience level.

I loved that the author was very honest about her own experiences. The honesty made reading the book feel like a conversation and it immediately gave you permission for any mistakes you have made or might make. She begins the book with Part 1 of her own experiences and then Part 2 provides more specific and detailed guidance for varying scenarios. The book addresses getting to know your team, handling conflict, expressing concerns, providing constructive and genuine feedback, receiving/ giving guidance and motivating change. I loved that at the end she also provided suggestions on where to begin and steps to follow AND redirected you to exactly where you can get help within the book with implementing the suggestions. I have read similar book where authors act like they have it all together, don't tell you where to begin and I end up being more confused after reading the book than I was before. GREAT READ!!

While there are other books with great advices, some of them fail to deliver value by being written in really dull manner or diving too deep in theoretical stuff. In the meantime Radical Candor delivers carefully selected insights from nowadays top software companies where author was working. It is also very relatable: most of the key points have an example from author's career and I believe many managers can recognize themselves and sometimes and compare how they handled the situation and what they learned from that. All in all, it is a great start to become better manager.

One of my favorite management/leadership books ever. (I've read way too many). Frank, implementable advice. I own a small construction company, and have utilized the three step feedback system often, to effective result.
There's a lot in here that's pretty "Silicon Valley"-ish, and she sure does a lot of name dropping. I believe she does this to lend credibility to the concepts. Not needed, and gets a bit thick.
This does not take away from the concepts if you can ignore the continuous flow of "See who I know?" (It is pretty impressive who Kim has managed to work for/with/under, etc.)
Bottom line: Direct, usable, implementable, logical approach to developing a team and having more fun at work. Solid.

Don’t underestimate the value of a manager who is willing to give you the straight story about what you need to fix - it will help you fill your performance gaps faster and be able to develop much better than if you have someone whose chief objective is to preserve your feelings.
