The 10% Entrepreneur: Live Your Startup Dream Without Quitting Your Day Job
Audible Audiobook – Unabridged
Patrick J. McGinnis (Author), Elijah Alexander (Narrator), Blackstone Audio, Inc. (Publisher)
4.4 out of 5 stars
This book is for a lot more people than I thought. You'll probably be surprised too.
Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2018
I've already loaned this book to three of my friends and if I ever get it back (hope you're reading this) I anticipate many more. McGinnis uses relatable anecdotes and a very plain-speaking style to guide readers through a process that a hell of a lot more people are interested in than I realized- engaging in at least casual, and occasionally ultimately quite expansive, entrepreneurial enterprises. I've been self-employed for years, and learned quite a lot about how to view managing my choice of contracts, negotiation, etc., in very useful- and better- ways. However, this book was also useful to friends running virtual storefronts and an investment dreamer.
If you fit anywhere within the definition of "entrepreneur," I think you'll learn at least one very valuable- and surprising- lesson about managing a dream business that will make this book worth it.

One of the best books on entrepreneurship.....
Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2017
The 10% Entrepreneur is one of the best books on entrepreneurship I've read. As a former startup founder who migrated back to the corporate world, this book provided a much needed jolt of motivation to re-engage in entrepreneurial ventures. McGinnis does an excellent job of demonstrating that successful entrepreneurship is not one size fits all. Despite, the common media narrative of entrepreneur's are "all or nothing," McGinnis provides contemporary, concrete, real-life examples across multiple industries (consumer packaged goods, restaurants, services, technology) of individuals that approached entrepreneurship with different methods and successful outcomes. I highly recommend this book to both aspiring and current entrepreneurs looking for original and interesting content, which I believe will increase their odds of success for current and future ventures.

Finally... I have been waiting for this book to be written. This is an incredible guide to becoming an entrepreneur in a practical, realistic way. I think this speaks to American dream of having your cake and eating it too. Whether you are a carpenter or a Wall Street executive, this book is for you, because it teaches you to explore your interest while not having to sacrifice the security of knowing you have a paycheck coming every week. This is an exceedingly well written self help guide for everyone. Even a full time entrepreneur enjoys side projects. I highly recommend that you get this fast read and enter the growing class of 10% Entrepreneurs.

You Don't Have to Go All in to be an Entrepreneur
Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2016
I write this from the perspective of a 100% entrepreneur. I wish I'd read this before I started my own venture as I could've avoided some landmines. Entrepreneurship is a hot topic these days as more and more people are realizing that Corporate America doesn't have their best interests at heart. Unfortunately, most of the books about being an entrepreneur only present a sunny, overly optimistic view of how it works and the sacrifices it entails. They gloss over the trials you and your family will endure, the psychological wear and tear, and the very real possibility of failure. Instead, they focus on the the freedom, the glamour, and the potential riches. This book is different. It's the most realistic depiction of the actual risks and rewards of being an entrepreneur. As it turns out, you don't have to ditch the safety of your day job in order to become an entrepreneur; you can pursue your dream of being a tycoon on the side and in a much safer manner than Entrepreneur, Inc. would have you believe. Mr. McGinnis gives you real life examples and actionable advice on how to take this leap of faith. The author has actually walked the walk, having survived AIG's blowup to carve out a new career advising and investing in startups. The commitment to transparency and real talk is the book's greatest strength. The author even goes so far as to reveal the size and value of his stakes in companies. There are so many people who could benefit from injecting some entrepreneurship into their careers. However, they are frightened because of the huge risk that they've been told they must take in order to do it well. Mr. McGinnis has provided the perfect blueprint for getting those aspiring moguls off the sidelines and into a venture that fits their risk profile, financial means, and talents. If you're considering working for a startup or small business in any capacity, you should definitely read this book. In the coming years, it will find its place among the classic texts of entrepreneurship such as The E-Myth and The Lean Startup.

Refreshing read after years of being told entrepreneurship was all about taking risks. This books is a good reminder that entrepreneurship is about exploring new ideas, and not necessarily about how risky the effort is. Its nice the someone helps to break those two concepts apart. I especially loved the profiles of real people - good to see the concepts in action. Highly recommend this book for both serial entrepreneurs and for corporate folks itching for more.

I am not normally one to write reviews, but in this case I am breaking my rule because I believe this book can help people who are not quite ready to leave their day jobs but want to broaden the business ventures in which they are involved. The 10% Entrepreneur is a practical guide to getting involved in side ventures in a meaningful and rewarding way. Today’s economy is one in which we all can benefit from diversifying our portfolio, which for me has proven to be very beneficial. I also had the pleasure of attending a talk by the author, which was not only informative and entertaining, but also enabled me to ask specific questions related to a number of my investments. In the interest of full disclosure, I am friends with the author. Also in the interest of full disclosure, when he told me he was going to write this book I was totally supportive and excited for him as a friend but completely disagreed with the premise. I felt if you're going to be an entrepreneur, you should make sure the pool is deep enough but then dive in head first and commit fully. Patrick's book changed my thinking. His 10% concept presents a very practical approach to introducing more entrepreneurship into your life in a way that mitigates risk, expands your knowledge base and network, and fits with your lifestyle and personal situation. His book is well written and logical and a real reflection of Patrick himself - smart, diligent, fun and of the highest personal integrity. Normally I wouldn't include this sort of comment in a review (even if I did know the author), but it is the authenticity of the narrative that makes it so relatable and tangible and therefore of real value.

The 10% Entrepreneur reads clear, is entertaining ,and is packed full of insightful commentary on entrepreneurship, including getting a bird's eye view into startups from the role of an advisor, angel, or member of the team.
I believe this book gives people who are looking for a way to break into startups a conservative, standardized approach to learning about opportunities, evaluating them, and getting involved in the ones that fit with what you're looking for. Ultimately, the individual has to make that decision, but the book puts out a framework that is easy to follow and anecdotes that help paint a picture of common situations we might find ourselves in.
I really enjoyed the author's writing style and industry expertise. It comes through in every page. For anyone who is interested in applying their talents to other ventures in their off-time, I would highly recommend this book as an introduction to getting started on that path. Now that I've taken in the lessons and experiences of the author, I feel much more confident to start approaching companies and pursuing the right opportunity in my off-time.
