Tribe Of Mentors: Short Life Advice from the Best in the World Kindle Edition

by Timothy Ferriss (Author) Format: Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars

2,770 ratings

Tim Ferriss, the #1 New York Times best-selling author of The 4-Hour Workweek, shares the ultimate choose-your-own-adventure book--a compilation of tools, tactics, and habits from 130+ of the world's top performers. From legendary athletes to famous entrepreneurs from artists to millionaire investor, these brief profiles will help you to answer the most difficult questions in your life to achieve amazing results and make a difference in your life.

Source:

In 2017, a number of my dear friends passed away in quick succession. It was a tough year, just as the case was with many.

It also served as an unmistakable reminder of the fact that we have this most precious and non-renewable resource.

With a renewed sense urgency, I started asking myself numerous questions:

Are my goals truly mine or just what I believed I ought to want?

How much of my life have I not considered due to planning poorly or overplanning?

How can I be kind to myself?

What can I do to better tell "no" to the trivial majority of people to be able to be able to say "yes" to the critical small number?

What can I do to better reevaluate my priorities and what is my goal in the world?

In search of answers I contacted the top world-class performers including a variety of superstars in their 20s, to legends of the 70s and 1980s. Every stone was thrown at.

This book offers practical and tactical tips by mentors who've come up with solutions. If you're looking to increase your productivity, overcome obstacles or reinvent yourself, somebody is on the same route and made notes.

The volume, Tribe of Mentors contains many of my peers that I grew up admiring as gods, idols, or demons. Only a tiny fraction of them have been featured on my show ( The Tim Ferriss Show More over 200 million downloads) This book is the first playbook that is completely new.

Whatever your problem or chance, something from these pages will aid you.

In addition, you will be taught:

Over 50 different morning routines for early risers and those struggling to get up.

* The way TED the curator Chris Anderson realized that the best method to finish a task is to relax.

* The most effective gifts are just $100 (you'll never need thought about buying the ideal gift ever again).

• How to overcome defeat and return to success.

* The reason Humans of New York creator Brandon Stanton believes that the greatest art is always the most risky.

* How to be able to meditate and be more present (and not only for those who are able to do it easily).

* Why tennis star Maria Sharapova believe that "losing makes you think in ways victories can't."

* How to achieve work-life balance (and the reasons why many people will claim it's not possible).

The billionaire Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz transformed the way he handles difficult situations in order to lessen suffering.

Strategies to survive (and endure) the huge amount of information that you absorb each day.

• How to get clarity about your goals and determine your prioritizations.

* and much more.

The reference book that I wrote for myself has changed my life. I definitely hope that it will do that it will do the same for you.

I wish you all the best in pursuing your individual route.

Best of luck,

Tim Ferriss

I get halfway down a page, and something fascinating is mentioned. 'oh wow, what's that?' goes my brain & I have to Google it. Half an hour to an hour later I re emerge from that rabbit hole of fascinating discovery, find my place, and go back to the page. I'm lucky if I reach the bottom of the page before it happens again. And I disappear into another journey, again.

I started denying myself the pleasure of following the shiny fascinating curiosities, and made it a few pages, before I found something irresistible - and it happened again. And then it was so amazing that I had to go round to my sister's for a coffee, and tell her all about it!

I think I might finish the book in about 5 years. Then it'll be time for a second reading to chase up the things I missed the first time.

Crazy Good!

I expected this book to be good because the basic concept of asking great questions to accomplished people is so sound. But the book has exceeded my expectations! Tim famously underpromises and overdelivers but this book just works! I always enjoy Tim's podcast because he gets generally well-known people to engage in fascinating conversations, and there is certainly some of that in Tribe of Mentors, but what is so amazing about this book is, in many cases he introduces us to amazing people that we probably haven't heard of but should have. This book will not only be a bestseller in its own right but it will no doubt point vast numbers of people to primary sources of which they were unaware. I am forming a list of all the books that I will buy as a result of reading about them, and being exposed to their authors, through this book. This book will sell books (as well as articles, blogs, podcasts and other media.) Tim is certainly not above self-promotion at times, but his greatest genius is that he lets other people shine too. He is this generation's Johnny Carson in that respect.

Inspirational for Anyone Feeling Lost on Their Path

Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2017

This book is an excellent compilation of advice from some of the most diverse and successful people in the world. It’s very organized and is one of those books you want to always have on your shelf in case you need some inspiration. One thing I loved about it is that it leads you to so many other books! Tim asks the same 11 questions in each interview. What’s amazing is how different everyone’s path to success has been. Here’s my top 10 takeaways from the book:

1. Meditate, meditate, meditate!

2. Work hard for what you want, not for what other people tell you you’re supposed to want

3. Get your diet and body in order

4. The path to success looks very different for everyone, but it almost always involves a lot of failure in the process

5. Possessions that make life easier and more enjoyable are worth buying

6. Read a lot of books!

7. Failure usually teaches more than success because it’s painful and memorable

8. Don’t listen to people who tell you it won’t work

9. Saying NO can be freeing

10. A walk can solve many problems

There are overlapping patterns in many of the interviews. The most common is to trust your instincts and keep pursuing what you believe is truly worthwhile. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for inspiration, especially those who feel lost on their path. Feeling lost is normal for everyone for a little while. I will keep listening to Tim’s podcast and reading his books!

Notes from a Reading Journal: “Tribe of Mentors,” by Timothy Ferriss.

One of my biggest takeaways from this book was finding out how many successful people include these three things within their daily schedules: meditation, journaling or keeping lists, and walking.

Part of the inspiration that Tim shares of the why/how this book came to be born was from one of his own morning journaling sessions where he wrote: “What would this look like if it were easy?”

Blurbs I Collected in my Reading Journal Specifically About Journaling/Keeping Lists:

• Richa Chadha - journals for clarity. Has kept a journal since she was ten.

• Turia Pitt - keeps a gratitude journal. P. 169: “I don’t weigh in too much on the science behind it, I just know if I do it I feel better. I’m not a believer in quick fixes, but I know it’s a very effective method to instantly change how you’re feeling.”

• Ed Coan - the list maker. P. 318: “When I travel and I’m on long plane rides, I’ll go through my last two weeks: what I did, what I thought of it, how I can improve it, and what I’m going to do so I don’t make mistakes. Stan Efferding actually taught me how to do that by writing lists.”

• Ray Dalio - said that his best under $100 investment was to buy a notepad to jot down ideas as they come to him.

• Sarah Elizabeth Lewis - said that she is a “sucker” for a good plain, no-lined notebook.

• Nick Szabo - said that he still gets a great kick and utility out of having a handy piece of paper on which to doodle and jot his latest brain flashes.

• Mathew Fraser - makes list whenever he’s overwhelmed, and says he’s rarely more than an arm’s reach from a notepad.

• Whitney Cummings - writes herself a gratitude list every morning regardless of how busy she is.

• Ben Silbermann - keeps a gratitude journal. P. 499: “If you have a habit of writing things down that you’re grateful for, then some part of your brain is constantly looking for those things, and you feel happier. It’s absurd in its simplicity.”

• Jim Loehr - P. 529: “The practice of daily journaling has been a remarkable tool in helping me navigate the storms of life and be my best self through it all.” Anything that is quantified and tracked on a regular basis would inevitably show improvement.

• Robert Rodriguez - keeps himself on task by using two notepads at work. One is for his major “task” that he is trying to do, and the other is for “distractions” that pop into his mind when he is trying to accomplish his main task.

Inherently Useful Despite Its Similarities to Tools of Titans

Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2017

Tribe of Mentors bears a lot of similarities to Tim Ferriss' previous book Tools of Titans. If you were a fan of Tools of Titans, you will likely also enjoy Tribe of Mentors. That being said, I have to say that his previous work was much better. Tools of Titans had a lot more of Tim's insights throughout, drawing together the many disparate interviewees into a coherent journey for the reader. Tribe of Mentors has little of that.

However, despite its lack of a thread which strings the Q&A portions together, I did gain insight from many of the contributors. In a book like this, if 5-10% of what I read is Earth-shattering, the book was worth every penny. If 25% is a pretty good read and interesting, I'm in. Tribe of Mentors succeeds here, which is why I give it 5-stars. Not every contributor was great for me, but I can see how each would be special to someone. I do wish, however, that Tim Ferriss would get away from these sort of omnibus tomes and create something original from within himself. Between Tools of Titans and Tribe of Mentors, I think I have enough to chew on so a third installment might be unwarranted.

If you're trying to choose between Tools of Titans and Tribe of Mentors, definitely go with Tools of Titans. It has a great index, reading list, and tv/movie watch list at the end that collates data from all of the interviews, and it has better, higher quality contributions from interviewees. If you've already read Tools of Titans, Tribe of Mentors is a nice companion piece, but doesn't stand as well on its own.

Life changing stuff - in tiny doses

Not to be read in one setting and you should definitely read Tools of Titans in addition. This book (and his others) have book recommendations and small snippets of wisdom that have the power to be life changing. Not all of it will be for you, but just from the 10-12 books that I have read in the past few weeks from the books recommended by the mentors in this book and Tool of Titans, I have made significant changes in my own life. Major lifestyle changes. This book helps to open up worlds you may not have explored. Favorite books that I read as a result of this book (and Tools of Titans) because now I can't remember how it all flowed... War of Art by Steven Pressfield, The Happy Body by Aniela Gregorek and Jerzy Gregorek, and more. I found myself in a Brazilian Jujitsu class the other day....because of the awesome advice of a retired Navy Seal. yea. And I now get up insanely early and say "good" when things go bad. This is good stuff. Tim, thank you.

Gopsmacking Delicious!

The best word to describe this book is delicious. It’s simply gopsmacking delicious. Delicious like a pizza where the crust is the perfect flakiness, a salad bar with bell peppers that are still crunchy, or the favorite cookies your mom bakes.

If you haven’t read it, it’s not a traditional book. It’s Tim asking a very large group of people the same seven questions. The greatest gift of the book for me, was the eclectic group of people I discovered reading it. Many are famous people you know, but a good number are not so famous. And they are amazing in their fields, and provide some brilliant insights.

The other strength is the diversity of opinions. One profile advises you to go to college and learn all you can there. The next one might suggest you skip university and dive into a project you love. It forces you to use your discernment and be a critical thinker. Powerful, thought-provoking and lots of fun too.

I write about these very things AND I found this book to be full of the wisdom that we need in life. One could write a great book on each of most of the questions - if you went laterally across the interviews. As for me, I bought a Kindle copy (and may also buy a hard copy as I’ve done with two of his other books) so that I could search for items to use in my writings. I will be using this in many of my writings. The best use of this book, as Ferriss suggests, is to take notes and organize them into your own reference books, or guides for life. Invaluable!

I'm about halfway through the book, but I think I've read enough of it to be able to give a review. I really liked "Tools for Titans", and I admit, I wasn't sure how this book would compare to it. The format of "Mentors" is cool because you can compare and contrast each respondent's answer with each other (since they're all asked the same questions). I liked that each person's response was a little snippet into their thought process, and you got to know some important information in a short span of time. There were some very thoughtful answers given to the questions by some of the respondents too, which I enjoyed. You can feel how much passion and heart Ferriss puts into each of his books, and this book was no exception. I'll be rereading this one for a long time to come.

How could there not be something here that can benefit you?

There were moments that I thought " am I almost done with this?" Only to turn the page and find a new person whom I engaged with better. Maybe that is the beauty in this, is that probably 50% of the thoughts are in alignment just said in different voices which helps me absorb them more. Then you have the other 50% which is almost overwhelming with versions of thoughts and ideas that are actual practices, actual examples that I found to be very relatable. It is tough to believe that in these 600 pages you cannot find 200-300 of them that work for you.

I was also pleasantly surprised to find that it was actually very different than Tools of Titans. Yes, the underlying idea of aggregating great ideas was there but the tone, delivery and more importantly, the humans providing the examples were different.

Tim, I’m writing to you because I just read 5 bullet-friday and you said you are reading the amazon reviews, so I figured I could share with you and others my opinion of Tribe and what you, in general, have done for me.

I am only halfway through Tribe it is just as amazing as when I first read Tools, just as amazing as when I first listened to a podcast episode of your show. Before hearing about you and what you do, which was exactly 1 year ago, I would have never in a million years dared to write an online review for the public to see.

I understand that you want to hear honest feedback on the book, which could help you improve and write an even better book in the future. But please don’t beat yourself up for not even one single bad review. If a person is writing a bad review, he or she, through no fault of his own, does not “get” what you are trying to accomplish.

My honest feedback is that Tribes is very similar to Tools and I feel it is at times somewhat redundant. But I don’t believe your intention was to do something different, but a continuation, a refinement of your Q&A model as a way to get those life-changing nuggets out there to the people who need them. Even if similar advice/tips come up, it is helping me reinforce them, strength my beliefs, and enhance my perspective.

I don’t agree with 100% of what you say and do, but I don’t have to. I shouldn’t. That would be wrong. You made me realize the importance of understanding other people perspective, thoughts, and way of thinking.

This book, your work, is priceless. You are truly saving lives. Please never stop inspiring others and helping them to find their way. I am eternally grateful for having found you, your books, and podcasts. You not only opened me to your world but to other people’s worlds through your recommendations of books, podcasts, movies/documentaries, which all combined have radically changed my life for the better. You have given me a new life, and want to thank you for that.

This book could sell just 1 copy and it should be a massive success for you, because you believed in it, because you created it and should proud of it, no matter if others don’t approve. You showed me this and this why I am not scared anymore of failure, of taking risks, stepping outside my comfort zone. What others think shouldn’t matter. What matters is what you believe in, and being true to that. I look forward to your next project.

Me encantaría invitarte un día a Puerto Rico para que inspires a miles de jóvenes a crear un nuevo y mejor Puerto Rico.

Pura Vida Amigo,

I read Tribe of Mentors after Tools of Titans was the first experience I have had of Tim.(I hadn't listened to any podcasts) ToT was really influential for me and I have added a number of practices to my work and personal life because of it.

This book builds on that for me, but is different enough that I don't feel like you should only get one or the other. Having relatively the same questions for each person, it is interesting to see the variance and often similarities in answers. With Tribe of Mentors I have slowed down and really highlighted and journaled while reading, something I suggest doing for this and ToT. I'm about half way through and highly recommend it. I feel it is going to be a great Christmas gift for many family and friends. Great job Tim, don't fret about what others think though, books are highly personal and affect people differently and at different times.

Perfect Coffee Table Book

This is an excellent assortment of advice from a vast variety of people. Tim Ferriss posed the same questions to each interviewee and recorded selected answers in each section. Each person's responses range from 1-4 pages, which makes this book easy to read in short spans. The people included range from Ayaan Hirsi Ali to Ray Dalio to Kelly Slater to Ben Stiller. As well as various entrepreneurial / tech people and fitness minded coaches/athletes, all with their own advice and many interesting backstories that provide context.

As far as gaining principled practical advice, the range and diversity makes this difficult because many people hold opposing and contradictory views, but this also shows there is not one winning formula for success. Highly recommend...it is simply impossible to not come away with at least a few gems and highly probable to get much more than that.

Short Life Advice From the Best in the World”

Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2018

I don’t recall exactly how I was turned on to Time Ferriss, but he’s been a constant in my journey since I began seeking my true self and searching for my purpose. He’s directly or indirectly responsible for a large chunk of my influences and post graduate adult learning. I listen to most podcasts he releases and I own all his books. I haven’t read all the books cover to cover for various reasons, but all of his books aren’t designed to be read cover to cover from page 1 to “The End”. I did however read Tim’s latest book, "Tribe of Mentors", cover to cover. And I did it in a fairly short amount of time (for me) considering it’s 570+ pages.

The full title is “Tribe of Mentors: Short Life Advice From the Best in the World”. Copyright 2017. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing New York, New York. I pre-ordered this book and received a 1st Edition Hardcopy. I can’t remember the cost; just shy of $30 probably.

My first impression of the book was its familiar size. Very similar to rest of his books approximately 9” tall X 7” wide X 2” thick. It doesn’t weigh as much as it looks like it should. Mostly black and gold colored cover with Carolina Blue highlights. No jacket. The paper is off white, grainy, and kinda sticky. Got that good “new book” smell. (Come to think of it, old books smell good too.) It’s bound in a way to create ridges on the fore-edge so thumbing through the book and quickly flipping pages is easy.

As I mentioned, Tim’s books aren’t story books. They more resemble reference books. This particular book is a collection of interviews and the table of contents is the list of 100’ish names of the questionees and where their answers can be found. As a cool twist Tim includes a few of the rejection letters he received from people he’d asked to participate. This addition emphasizes how folks with couth and courtesy say “Thank you but no thank you”.

My favorite feature of the book is that all the interviewees were given the same 11 questions to ponder and respond. Tim dissects each question and reveals how and why he crafted them and what he’s looking to get out of them. The feature of repeated questions makes reading the book very rhythmic. The pages go by quickly and the mind switches to auto-pilot. It’s more like to listening to a conversation than reading. The 11 questions are:

What is the book (or books) you’ve given most as a gift and why? Or what are one to three books that have greatly influenced your life?

What purchase of $100 or less has most positively impacted your life in the last six months or recent memory?

How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success? Do you have a “favorite failure” of yours?

If you could have one gigantic billboard anywhere with anything on it—metaphorically speaking, getting a message out to millions or billions—what would it say and why? It could be a few words or a paragraph.

What is on the best or most worthwhile investments you’ve ever made? (Money, time, energy, etc…)

What is an unusual habit or absurd thing that you love?

In the last five years, what new belief, or behavior, or habit has most improved your life?

What advice would you give a smart, driven college student about to enter the “real world”? What advice should they ignore?

What are bad recommendations you hear in your profession or area of expertise?

In the last five years, what have you become better at saying no to (distractions, invitations, etc.)? What new realizations and/or approaches helped? Any other tips?

When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused or have lost your focus temporarily, what do you do?

Only high performers were questioned (some of which I was familiar, some not) and they lead us down a rabbit hole with their answers. They suggest enough books, TED talks, poems, articles, authors, etc. to keep anyone busy for years to come. Tim also lists each interviewee’s social media handle(s) so readers can connect and follow on the interwebz.

Tim’s organization of the massive amounts of information in this book is meticulous. He includes a list of recorded conversations from respondents and where to find them online. He includes a mentor index. Not every respondent answered every question so Tim includes an index of questions answered by interviewee. He even includes blank lined pages for readers to use in making their own notes and indexes.

Style and substance of “Tribe of Mentors” is lockstep. An amazingly informative book presented in a friendly conversational style. The books organization is on par with everything else TF has done. “Tribe” didn’t call for as many organizational asides as “Tools of Titans” and that was welcome in my opinion. No decoder rings necessary.

“Tribe of Mentors” will appeal to anyone who’s looking for more shit to read, learn, and get better. It’s a red pill type book that I personally read through one time, took notes, and now leave lying around in the open to conveniently revisit. As a coffee table book intelligent friends will pick it up to read a few passages and instant meaningful conversation should break out. If not, you may want to re-think the folks you let hang out at your place.

He asks a set of 11 questions for each interviewee, and then puts in the most interesting few questions from each person into short 3-5 page chapters, so very easy to digest. Each person is very successful in their field. His mantra is "deconstructing world class performance" and that's what he does. The 11 questions are things like, "what do you do when frustrated or unable to make progress", "what would you put on a billboard for advice", etc. Great stuff and I keep a notebook on the advice I most like from the book.

I think Tim shd tap more into his 4 hr work week interest and realize moat people in the audience are interested in working less and living to the max and dont care abt business mogels. And as a woman I am much more interested in stories of women so at least half the interviews w women pls. (Tim what abt coauthoring w a woman next time??) Anyway keep it up tim. I love your stuff.

and truly enjoy the long form interviews

I think this book perfectly delivers on its intention. I've listened to almost every episode of The Tim Ferriss show, and truly enjoy the long form interviews. At the end of each interview Tim asked rapid fire questions that I think do a great job to tie up the end of the episode and deliver the actionable items. This book cuts straight through the long form interview right down to the action items. I see some complaints that's it's not a Tools of Titans 2 but I don't think it was advertised as such. This book is broken up into easy to read short sections that take 5-10 minutes each to read. I've picked it up multiple times since Tuesday, looked through the table of contents, picked someone I thought might be interesting and read their section. Also one of my favorite pieces is the build your own index in the back, I love this!

As a side note - I might recommend you purchase it at a local bookstore instead of Amazon. They dropped the ball on shipping and my book arrived with a damaged/dented front and back cover. This is pretty disappointing when you pre order a book and don't want to wait for a new one, oh well it still reads the same.

So far I've made it through the first few interviewees, and have already found life-impacting gems. It's especially fun to find truths that resonate or speak to my own idiosyncrasies... it's reassuring at least and reinforces the need to pay attention to our own uniquenesses, rather than ignoring them just to 'fit the mold'. I'm also looking forward to learning how to ask the right questions, and the doors it will open as I apply this process to my own life... Thanks to the author for fishing while teaching us how to fish

So, this book is presently part of my morning routine. I am about one-third of the way into it and look forward to the next installment. Each chapter is by someone different and each person brings a new perspective, new lessons, and new items to check out. My to-read list is growing as many of the recommendations are compelling. I often have a quote to ponder or an idea to digest as I go about my day. I really love Tribe of Mentors and highly recommend it.

This generation's Dale Carnegie.

Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2018

What Tim does is something only one person really seems to be able to do every several decades. The last time an author with this unique ability to network and so much power has to be Dale Carnegie - and he had a multi-millionaire providing his introductions from the start, Tim worked hard for his! Dale certainly worked hard too and he is great for all he did; however, for the modern ages, we now have Tim Ferriss. Without his self-experimental, completely humble, and obsessive lust for knowledge, we would all still be trial-and-erroring our paths alone. This book and his others takes all of the best wisdom from the superstars in their prospective fields and puts it into an easily digestible format for society to (hopefully) devour, learn from, and grow. Many thanks (again) Tim!

A Fantastic Book, especially for the college student/graduate

Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2017

Verified Purchase

If you are in college or graduating soon, I think this is one the best books you can buy. Think of it like a reference -- you pick it up here and there, finding some insight that can change the way you think or approach a problem. Sure, there can be parts where it's repetitive but what's most important is implementing some of the lessons to your own life (think of it like creating mental models). I've created a little morning ritual around this book: 30 minutes every morning - 10 minutes reading/10 minutes exercising or meditating/10 minutes writing and reflecting

1. I would read a few pages in the morning (~3 mentors)

2. Meditate on some of my thoughts or go for a short run

3. Write down my reflections. Convert any insight from mentors into actions. Plan for the day or week.

Part of what the author does in his interview is ask successful people what books inspired them or what books they often give away to others. I love having this huge list in my home. I never run out of meaningful reading material. He did all the work.

I have not highlighted this much in a book for a long, long time. From books to read to inspirational quotes to items I want to buy, there often multiple takeaways on each page.

I didn’t agree with all the contributors, but I actually think it enhances the book to have a variety of approaches to the same questions.

It’s long, but I can’t see how he could shorten it without cutting great content.

The format of short answer is wonderful. Some I don't get much from, others I got a lot from (Terry Crews). I borrowed it from the library, and after ten pages bought my own copy. This is the kind of book I'll return to over and over again. It's very good, and honestly, I'm tepid on Ferris' work. So bravo Tim. This one shines in my opinion!

Now I want to go back through and write some of my favorite thoughts... wish I would have done it as I went along, because there is A LOT of really great advice in here. And many things I want to start implementing myself. THANKS TIM, I'M A FAN!

Great book on life perspectives.

Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2017

I have bought all of Tim Ferriss's books. I've loved them all. This book is meant to be more inspirational than hands-on self-help, and consequently may not appeal to the more can-do Ferris' followers. I don't plan to read it sequentially, as i don't think there is much value in doing it. I have opened the book randomly, and every single time I've found something that provides perspective or a different spin on "life". In this way, this is a great book. I also love it, though in a different way. Thanks Tim.

Great book! If you feel like you have something to learn and are open-minded and humble, this is a book for you. You can start with anywhere in the book, just pick someone and read about what they have to say. I especially enjoy reading about people who do things I know nothing about and what kind of things help them achieve. But I'm sure you also read about someone you know and admire. This is a book I would gift others and I never give books as gifts.

Tim queried the same information from a number of well-known, “successful” people, and clear patterns emerge that can help anyone who chooses to follow the path. I won’t list my takeaways, but these these are not secrets. They are common sense, but they require discipline (thanks Jocko). Read, reflect, and do what you know you should be doing.
