Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being near, in, on, or under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do
Audible Audiobook – Unabridged
Wallace J. Nichols (Author, Narrator), Céline Cousteau - foreword (Author), Hachette Audio (Publisher)
4.5 out of 5 stars
A classic book from the marine scientist Wallace J. Nichols on the profound impacts of water on our health and well-being.
Why do we feel drawn to the ocean in the summer? What is it about water that helps make our bodies and minds at relaxed? The book Blue Mind, Wallace J. Nichols revolutionizes the way we think about these questions, while revealing the surprising advantages of being on, in or under, or close to water. The book combines cutting-edge neuroscience and compelling personal stories of top athletes, top researchers, veterans of the military, and talented artists, he illustrates how water's proximity can boost performance, improve peace, reduce anxiety, and improve professional performance.
Blue Mind Blue Mind only demonstrates the vitality of our relationship to the ocean, but also offers an enlightening "blueprint" for a better existence within this Blue Marble that we call home.

Having a degree in Marine Biology, I found some of the information in the book to be a bit of "common sense"..... Or so I thought. But when I began teaching college biology to nonmajors, I realized that this book can really light those students up. Blue Mind really got some of my students excited about the oceans and ecology, engaged at greater levels with the endocrine system and hormones, gave them a better idea of anatomy and physiology, and most importantly, I think, showed my students that science is relevant NOW, and to them. Dr. Nichols is a great example of a scientist and advocate to a generation of young adults who are just waiting for his messages!

J. Nichols has created a gem of a "textbook". I would like to see this information shared in all school curriculum, corporations, and doctor's offices. This book is based on essential ancient wisdom packaged with new research, and written in a very relatable way. The surprisingly obvious thing, that our wellbeing can INSTANTLY be enhanced with something as simple, and as in close proximity to you, as your own shower/bathtub, a visit to a body of water, watching a water related film or looking at photos of an ocean wave, etc., isn't well practiced by so many of us. I truly believe if we connected with nature more, especially with water, we wouldn't have the magnitude of diseases and conditions (i.e. heart disease, cancer, diabetes, mental illnesses) that have been so common and prevalent for far too long. Connection with nature, and particularly water, is such an easy (an enjoyable!) fix to these problems. I hope that tapping into a blue mind (a calm meditative joyful creative state - induced by one's connection with water) will become widely known and practiced from kids to adults. I highly recommend this book to everyone, at any age, at any stage of health, and of any professional background. I have been in the field of health and wellness for over 30 years, as a Registered Dietitian & Certified Health Coach, and believe that blue mind can play a key role in each one of our lives. After you read Blue Mind, hop over to J. Nichols social media (facebook/IG) and site to learn more and connect with a global blue mind community. I have been sharing this information with clients, colleagues, friends and family and encourage you to do the same. As J. says "I wish you water" and "live blue".

Very inspiring book (can also highly recommend the audiobook - read by the author himself) connecting our emotions, senses and wisdom of our body with fascinating science studies - from neuroscience, psychology, ecology, human behaviour to marine biology to answer the question why humans are so enchanted and in love with water. More importantly. the book not only provides answers from a vast variety of different perspectives, but motivates the reader to ask the next big question for themselves. Why is this so important? A daring alchemy of science and personal/ emotional anecdotes make this a great read - especially while in nature and or near water. It equally challenges the mind as well as the heart, provides examples of water's value in everyday life - whether at home or at work. A call to care. For each other and for the oceans and waterways. How can we become better, as a human, as people, as being one with nature- our health and happiness deeply connected with and rooted in our evolution from water. Water is Life.
Our planet is blue. Our mind should be too. Lets make it so !

I honestly do not know where to begin... I usually am not a book reader, but when I come across a true story or a interesting title, I tend to go for it. I am currently studying Marine Biology in college and I really enjoyed this book. I even got to meet the author in person and get my book signed by Wallace J. Nichols via a Lecture Series Event featured with the WAVE Foundation at Newport Aquarium for my school (Thomas More University). This book not only opened my overall opinion about water, but it also gave me confidence within the field of marine biology. I think being near, in, on, or under water (as the book states), is an important role of why humans exist. If we did not have our oceans, we would really not be here. The ocean to me is my safe place, my passion, my well-being, my body, and everything in-between. It gives me a sense of power and hope in this world. This book also does a good job pointing out the negatives and positives throughout. One negative is that our generation or younger generations are so glued to being inside, playing video games, being on our phones, that we miss out on the wonders that lie ahead of us outside, in nature, in our backyards, etc. It is sad sometimes, because we have such a beautiful earth that we live on and some tend to take and destroy our earth. The ocean is part of us and we are part of the ocean. Blue Mind also attracts so many people other than marine biology majors. It was super cool to see some of my friends who are non majors and to see their perspective of the world after reading this book. They were more open with their feelings, their interests, etc. Overall, I would 100% recommend this book to anyone!

After reading this book, don't walk, but race to the water!
Full Disclosure: I recently interviewed 'J' for our Inspire Nation Show.
I love this book, and I can't get enough of it! I admit, I'm a water-aholic. I learned to swim before I could walk. I've always take the opportunity to jump into the water...even in the cold. And I've always loved to ride my bike, run, walk, or drive near the water, I can't get enough of it. And now I understand why. This book is a powerful treatise to understand our connection with this magical blue stuff....it makes up the water, it makes up the sky, and it makes up us...we're over 70% water ourselves, the same exact makeup of the ocean.
This is one beautiful book, and the work 'J' has done to bring water to our minds, and to help save the sea-turtles, is beyond commendable. I cannot recommend this book enough; except when given a choice between reading and heading to the water...put down the book, and head for the water...you'll thank yourself for it!

The secret to a healthy happy life revealed

This could be one of the most important books you ever read. Human beings are eternally bound to water, yet as we age and "mature," we somehow forget the incredible importance of water on our wellbeing. Blue Mind is the seminal work exploring the remarkable power of being in, on, or around bodies of water; and the magical healing properties they have.
If you've been feeling trapped by the "red mind" realities of life, especially in today's world with work, stress, COVID, and so much more filling our hearts and minds with angst; please do yourself a favor and pick up this book. It will literally change our life, and quite possibly save it.

Turns out it’s not just you who upon wandering through ...

Turns out it’s not just you who upon wandering through the woods finds a small watershed and is drawn to stop and rest. A small smile is felt on your face. You feel as though your blood pressure is lower. It is. It seems your worries have been moved to the back of your brain. They have been. This book, in a methodical and scientific way, explains why one feels healthier around water. Heavily referenced, and occasionally deep into neuroscience, it will teach more than you want to know about neural maps in the brain and which part of the brain is responsible for what, and how and why. I found myself rereading some of those sections because I wanted to understand.
You may want to buy a boat or go on vacation after reading this one.

Explains our enchantment with water...
Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2015
If you live near the ocean like me or just enjoy vacationing along its shores or those of lakes and rivers, this book explains our enchantment with everything water and why we love to play in it or just gaze upon its beautiful reflective surface. Wallace Nichols spends a lot of time in the water and has brought together the latest research about how earth's bodies of water may be used not only for fitness and recreational purposes, but also for the healing of the body, mind and spirit. The book is interlaced with enlightening stories about people with physical and emotional issues whose lives were changed through spending time in water and also just breathing the air close to large bodies of water. He also exposes many environmental problems that require our attention to preserve the health of earth's water features for the preservation of future generations, both human and non-human species.

Why Blue Mind is Essential Reading for the Conservation Movement
Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2016
Wallace J. Nilchols has written an important and inspiring book about why our connection to water and especially the ocean is important for our physical, emotional and cognitive health. As a conservationist, this book is important to me to help to explain to the general public why investing in the protection and restoration of our open aquatic spaces as well as making sure we have access to them, is an urgent priority. Anyone who cares about nature and our nature-deficit disorder should read this book. And then you must teach others what you have learned. I am grateful to Dr. Nichols for the years of research that went into this groundbreaking work and his passion for spreading the message of why we need water. And as the wife of a surfer with two surfer sons who are also ocean lifeguards I know that for our family's happiness, contact with our ocean is an absolute must.

Ever wonder why water makes us a feel SO good? Because it's who we are! It's what we're made up and it channels neurons in our brains. There's science behind why we love the beach. Dr. Nichols teaches us the why and encourages us to not accept on blind faith but to go forward and try exploring the benefits and healing properties of being in, on, and around water ourselves. Inspiring, justifying, and refreshing. The next *big thing* for the treatment of many cognitive impairments and every day burn-outs. I wish you water!

Understanding the benefits of being near water
Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2018
I just started reading this book, but it well-written and offers interesting insights to the physical and psychological benefits of living and being near water. As a person who grew up 30 minutes from a beach and who has spent most of every summer being near, or in, water, I often have wondered if I was the only one who felt this compelling need to be near water, near the ocean. I certainly know that I always feel better, calmer and happier when I am near the ocean or in a pool, regardless of what the weather is doing.

Ever wonder why a day at the beach leaves you feeling so good? This book explains it. Wallace Nichols is far from a nerdy marine biologist. He has a beautiful way of uncovering the reasons you love being in, on or near a body of water. Wallace also recruits a team of experts that you may not expect to deliver his message. For years I've felt it and known it, but its so interesting to dive into the science behind this phenom. For anyone who lives near the water-because they have to-this book is a must read. At the very least, after reading it you will be the most interesting conversationalist at a cocktail party!

I and my family have always been happiest near or at the ocean shores. The farthest back that we have traced our family was to Normandy, France in the 1200's. I know my paternal and maternal grandfathers were from the Memramcook region of New Brunswick, CA., which is where the Acadians were from. Many of our relatives had or still do own homes on the shores in the Shediac region of NB. This book opened my eyes
as to why we love being at the the sea shores, lakes, and water in general. I will reread this book in the future. Blue Mind should be a part of the High School and College curriculum.

Everyone with any exposure to water, ie everyone of us should read this as a way to enlighten and encourage what we already know to be so. We require water and water requires us. Those less enthralled with science might find parts a bit tedious, but well worth the modest effort needed as the author builds his excellent case. This book should be on the list of required readings for high schools and higher and not just for science/ecology classes. The ending will grab your imagination.
