Ideal Future Self + One Goal = New You
Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2020
I have read all the author's other books and even though I enjoyed them, I always felt like he was giving me things to DO rather than a way to BE and this book fills that gap. At its core this books message is simple - a clear vision of your ideal future self + one keystone goal will create a powerful identity/personality and all your future decision will be filtered through that new identity. The author argues this is how success is best created. While delivering this message he give the reader lots of helpful tips that he has advocated for in prior books.
All considered, this book is best described as a goal setting book on steroids. If you are looking for a fresh look at classic material this will be a welcomed addition to your library.

ALMOST everyone should read this book
Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2020
DISCLOSURE: I gave a blurb for this book, and I consider Ben a friend, so my review is biased from that perspective.
Let me tell you the massive claim in this book:
ALL personality tests are BS.
I was skeptical when I started reading it, and sold at the end. My company has eliminated all of those tests in our hiring process because of this book.
And it goes way deeper into how you can actually change your personality, how to start and lock in lasting change, even in your identity. I used some of what I learned to change the process we use at Scribe.
HIGHLY recommend this book.
But I DO NOT recommend the book if you refuse to change your mind. If you think personality tests are right and valid, and nothing will change your mind, skip the book. No reason to waste money, get frustrated and write an angry review. Just save yourself the energy.
But if you are open to looking at the world in a new way, and getting a new understanding of how your brain and personality and identity work, pick it up and read it.

You can create your life - here’s how
Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2020
Saying “it’ll change your life” is cliche, but... if you want to change who you are and keep changing who you’re becoming, this book is for you. It’s a game changer.
It’s not a single moment or paragraph or book that changes your life, but intentional action towards the person you’ve DECIDED to be.
You can change your direction, your motivation, your desire, your personality, your health, everything.
It’s all a choice. Everything you want is a decision and Dr. Hardy shows you how to do it in this book. It’s not just educational. It’s not a bunch of psychology-speak. It’s easy to read, easy to understand, easy to put into use. Choose. Plan. Act.
I love the bullets at the end of each section for recapping and journaling what I want to think about, decide, and do.
Don’t read this book then set it down. Do the steps! Write down the answers to the questions. I’m reading it all the way through, then going back, reading it again, and do the journaling prompts. But I already feel myself shifting from my old self to my new self. It’s not hard, but you have to do the work.
Thank you for writing this book. It’s mind blowing, but also useful. Thank you for giving me work I can do to take action and make real change. I could underline every sentence. I’ll definitely read it multiple times, probably once a year. Thank you!!
Trauma doesn't define your life

This book was really powerful to me. We've all experienced our own form of trauma and the author is sensitive to the reality of that. At the same time, he makes it clear that we can still live the life we want regardless of our past. We can reframe our story. I was moved and inspired by the real stories and psychology based research shared throughout the book. It also includes questions to get you really thinking and ready to take action rather than just reading through it. Such an empowering book!

“To thine own Desired Self be true”

I finished reading this book two nights ago and I’ve already given advice from its ideas and principles MULTIPLE times to friends and family. The notion that you can change who you are —- not that you must or should, but that you CAN if you want to — is such a game changer.
And I love that Dr. Hardy doesn’t just share real stories to show THAT it is possible — he gives us the HOW as well: four specific “levers” anyone can learn to pull to transform into who they want to be, and have what they want to have.
If I had to sum it up in one line...
“To thine own Desired Self be true.”

Do you feel Stuck in Life? Read this book!
Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2020
I'm lucky enough to have been able to read an advanced copy of Personality Isn’t Permanent, since I interviewed Dr. Hardy for my podcast, Stories of Hope in Hard Times. I also ordered a hardbound book because I plan on re-reading this transformational book over and over!
This is a powerful book about hope. First, it teaches that you can change who you are. Your personality can change. It isn't permanent! Isn't that a liberating concept to ponder? You don't have to stay stuck if you aren't happy. You can change! Second, it teaches you that the trauma you have experienced in life is can be reframed/changed so that you look more at the lessons and who you've become because of it instead of staying stuck.
In the introduction, Dr. Hardy explains, “The biggest evidence of the ideas in this book is my own life.” He changed from being a video game junkie who barely graduated from high school to being the #1 blogger on Medium and earned his doctorate in Psychology.
One thing I love about this book is the personal stories Dr. Hardy shares throughout. The stories help teach the concepts he is explaining in such a logical but extremely personal manner. I didn’t feel like I was being talked down to by a doctor who was speaking way above my head. Dr. Hardy is personable and down to earth.
I love the journaling prompts throughout the book. Dr. Hardy really invites us to write our thoughts, process our traumas, and imagine our future self and write about it. The more clear who we want to be becomes, we can then break down into mini-goals how to get there.
This is a must read for 2020—especially in our troubled times. There is hope, and we can change!

You are not defined or restricted by your past
Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2020
Over the past year and a half, I have read many of Benjamin Hardy's articles on Medium, saving at least two-thirds of these articles for future reference. His latest book, Personality Isn't Perfect, is packed with nuggets of wisdom. My past (think personality tests) does not define who I am now or whom I could become in the future. I was encouraged by this book to continue to focus on the person I want to be - in line with the Holy Spirit's transforming me each day to become more like Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Although Hardy does not mention Jesus, I was reminded of our yearning to do the work that God has for us now (Ephesians 2:10; see the footer of this page) and how this will continue after we enter the New Heaven and New Earth. Hardy writes, "I can't do this!", while at the same time always wanting to be better...
I highly recommend this book.

I was a huge fan of the Color Code until I read this book and started to really understand that by defining myself as a Code Red that I was limiting my potential in every area. My husband was defined as a Blue (emotional) and I labeled him as weak, which wasn't fair at all to him. This book helped me to open my eyes to realize that we aren't stuck in a box, that we have the AGENCY and ABILITY to change our minds and become who we want to be by focusing on our future selves, which is much more important than who we are today. I give myself and other much more grace now that I understand this concept. This is a MUST READ.

Stop trying to find yourself and your passion. Engage life with meaningful purposes instead!
Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2020
I am more than halfway into it. The book is full of excellent ideas that range from solid research results to practical applications. Dr. Hardy talks about creating and forging your own destiny by destroying a very powerful myth - "my personality is who I am." While many have heard about growth mindset - it is the first time that I am seeing how permeating fixed mindsets are in life and what to do about them, and more importantly - how to build my life and my personality around a purpose. My favorite passage so far is about "finding the right person":
Rather than marrying a person for who they currently are, it takes far more wisdom and discernment to marry for who you can see them becoming—their future self—and how they will enable you to become your desired future self. Will marrying this person enable you to do and be all that you truly want? And will you enable them to be all that they truly want? Who and what could both of you become if you were partners?
Marry for aligned purpose, not personality. That purpose will transform both of you over time. Developing a powerful relationship isn’t about “finding,” but collaboratively creating and becoming new people together, through the relationship.

The quote above is from Dan Sullivan, business guru and founder of Strategic Coach. Ben's new book helps bring this quote to life by helping you create your future self...the result being a more motivated and focused you today (thus your present is better).
I'm a member of Ben's self-development program called AMP 10X which I highly recommend. But at nearly $1,000 it isn't attainable for everyone. Personality isn't Permanent is the answer if you are serious about changing your trajectory, creating a better life, and just feeling better about life in general.
If you are going to buy one book this year to improve your life, consider Personality isn't Permanent.

This was the absolute best book I could have picked to kick off a new year!
I actually love personality tests. We've done the DiSC and Kolbe assessments at my work. I think they're really helpful in getting to know yourself better and how you work with other people.
But, in his book, Personality Isn't Permanent, Benjamin Hardy definitely makes you think differently about those kinds of assessments. Personality tests can be limiting, and it's important not to let them prevent you from creating the life you are meant to live.
“When you decide who you’ll be and the life you’ll live, you can have anything you truly want. You can become an outlier. You can have experiences that not only shock other people but shock yourself ”
Hardy focuses a lot on "trauma" which, to be honest, I found a little hard to get my head around. We tend to think of trauma as major incidents that cause PTSD. However, what he means by trauma is: failures and missed opportunities. It can be a much smaller scale -- anytime someone or something made you feel bad about something that now limits you in some way.
He gives the example of a woman whose teacher corrected her drawing something like 40 years ago, and this incident stuck with her her entire life. It made her feel like she was not capable of creating art and so she never pursued it, despite a deep inner desire to illustrate children's books.
Throughout the book, I had to keep thinking about what trauma may have occurred to me that could be holding me back in some way. I realized public speaking is probably my thing. There wasn't a specific incident of a person making me feel bad, it's just a fear of mine. I shy away from it. "I'm not good at public speaking," is an excuse I tell myself and others. My personality tests confirm that this is not one of my strong suits. I am a heads-down, behind the scenes kind of worker, not an Influencer (on the DiSC scale). If public speaking were necessary for growth in my career, then this is the type of self-limiting belief that would hold me back from becoming who I'm truly meant to be.
Hardy talks a lot about journaling:
“Your journal is a brilliant place to actively convince yourself, emotionally, that what you want is already yours—you influence yourself through strategic communication”
In every chapter, he provides self-reflective questions to answer in your journal. This is very helpful for the reader to apply what they're learning as they read the book.
Personality Isn't Permanent is a very motivational read! I definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in personal development and growth.

I'm about 1/2 the way through at this point. Ben has an amazing mind and has many other peoples' true life experiences through-out his books, which he uses to show various points about personality, identity, trauma, purpose, goals, our present, and how to utilize all of these things, and more, to create our future self. In other words, to change how we perceive our past to reframe who we are, and then to shape who we want to be, rather than allowing some fixed, and incorrect belief, limit or completely stunt, our growth and potential. He uses science, quotes other writers, and destroys false and limiting 'status quo' ideologies and opens your mind to your creative, motivated, and growth-oriented self. Things which seemed too heavy and overwhelming are now seemingly exciting to get rid of and to let go of, as I focus on changes I've wanted, but misunderstood why I wasn't striving for. I love the information in Ben's books and this one is amazing! You will be glad for the knowledge and new perspectives, and new excitement about life, you will gain, from reading this book!

Dr. Hardy clearly and concisely drives to the point and left me with real, actionable steps I can take to define and realize a future vision of myself. I have recommended this book family, friends, coworkers, and have made it required reading for kids. Everyone who has read it has been equally impressed with this book.
Here's what I appreciate most about the book:
Writing is clear and straightforward.
Great explanations of scientific reasoning without confusing the reader.
A perfect mix of relatable examples that clarify the points.
Help with putting the ideas in action with writing prompts and lots of questions to ponder.
Most importantly - truth!
Hopefully many, many people will read this and benefit from this book.

You Need to Read This Book If You Want to Keep Growing
Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2020
I've been working with psychometrics professionally for years and I've seen the problems Ben writes about in this book -- and seen the vivid negative ramifications in real life. "Personality" tests (the few good ones) are *tools* that can be useful within a certain context, for a certain purpose, and in a certain manner ... kind of like a hammer is a tool useful within a certain context, for a certain purpose, and in a certain manner.
BUT people have vastly "over applied" them, assumed a rigid identity based upon them, and then ended up sabotaging their own growth, improvement, and transformation. I have definitely made that mistake myself, too.
But (metaphorically speaking) it's stupid to let a hammer give you your identity ... if you know what I mean.
I'm thankful Ben has done the hard work to skillfully bring these issues to light and blaze a better trail forward for us to follow!

I periodically took the MBTI and was puzzled how it would change - or how it wouldn't be definitive, sometimes putting two indicators near the line between the two extremes. This book explained it, and more.
I knew that non-scientific labels - 'stupid' or 'ugly' for example. would affect people for years, and finding a way to some other conclusion about yourself could change outcome. But I assumed personality didn't change. I got interested in this book when Dr Ben Hardy was on a couple of podcasts I listen to.
After a fascinating introduction, he addresses myths about personality tests - particularly the MBTI.
From there, Hardy demonstrates a path forward - addressing trauma (which in this case is less severe but more frequent than we realize), building confidence, and other steps to change your destiny, not just how you see yourself.
I bought the Audible and Kindle, and also the hardback book.

Ben Hardy does a masterful job of debunking the myth that you’re stuck with your current personality limitations, i.e., if you’re shy, too bad, there’s nothing you can do about it. You were born that way and you’ll stay that way. Hardy explains the science behind how we are able to change the limitations of our current personality and put our lives on a completely different and more fulfilling path. His message is not another, “fake it until you make it”, it’s a manual on how to actually become the personalty you choose. If you crave to be a more dynamic person and lead a more dynamic life, Hardy shows us the practical steps on how to make these life trajectory shifts. For all of us who feel that our current personality type has held us back from having the life we’ve wanted, Hardy gives us insight in how to take our lives in a new direction. This book has radically changed how I view myself. Having read various self-help books, countless blogs and content on the internet, this book is perhaps one of the best I've read. It speaks in clear, understandable language. The author doesn't preach from above or lord knowledge unlike some of the other authors I've read (I *HATE* the random Latin/German many use to sound intelligent).
This book makes you think REALLY hard about what you want, who you are and WHY. It is brutal at times asking oneself difficult questions, tearing down what I thought was 'right'. But after being left vulnerable, I can now say I can build myself up the right way with a solid foundation for the future.
The courses that came with the book (bonus stuff) is also wonderfully done.

I love taking personality tests. I am an INTJ on the Meyers-Briggs Personality scale. I am an equal combination of red and blue on the Hartman personalty profile - which has led to our family joking that I am "Red" with remorse. I have an Upholder tendency in the 4 tendencies of Gretchen Rubin. I know my strengths in the Clifton StrengthsFinder system. I have seen some personality test that I don't like and don't think fit, but on the whole I have loved getting to know myself and what I can be good at and where I am weak by learning from different personality tests. This new book by Benjamin Hardy is not a believer in personality tests. He "debunks" myths around personality - like personalities can be categorized into "types", personality is fixed, and your personality is your "authentic" self.
I loved this book and that is coming from someone who loves personality tests and will probably keep taking them. Benjamin Hardy says that our personalities are not fixed and that we can choose who we want to become, no matter what kind of tendencies we have. He encourages deciding what you want in life and who you want to be as a means of becoming the person you dream of being and not being sidetracked by real or imagined personality traits,
I 100% agree with this viewpoint. I believe that we are free to choose who we want to become. It takes effort, it takes setting and achieving goals, it takes failure and it takes a vision of our "future self" (which he talks about a lot).

Having read Dr Hardy's articles for several years did provide me with the backdrop of what to expect with some of its tenets that I have now begun to adopt for success. My dog-eared book is getting a workout with my handwritten notes throughout. The concepts he comprehensively demonstrates through real and conceptual explanations are being implemented with my new vision and goals set forth. I'll update this review further when milestone goals have been reached. Enjoy your journey.

I can't recommend this book high enough.
I can honestly say that my approach to life has shifted because of what I've learned from Benjamin Hardy the last couple of months, in this book and other materials.
This book is a game changer.
I've taken almost every personality test out there. I've "learned" a lot about myself through them.
Now I realize I used them as a crutch.
I now spend more time working on crafting my future self rather than thinking about molding my life to who I am now.
I promise you'll learn a LOT if you read this book.
Pick it up, read it, and apply it - you'll be glad you did.

All I can say is that this book is exactly what I needed. I went through Dr. Benjamin Hardy's free online 30 day transformation and was so impressed by his guidance that I bought this book. I cannot even begin to relay how enlightening this was for me. It isn't as if I've never heard the information before; but, the way in which he lays it out made all the difference. The steps he offers absolutely work for me. I can't recommend this book enough - Personality Isn't Permanent, and I am very, very thankful for that truth.

If you have time for only one book this year, choose this one. If you don’t enjoy reading you should listen to the audible version. So many books are about 1/3 value and 2/3 fluff. I kept expecting to find fluff. I kept finding value. I am telling everyone I know to read this book. If you have a goal and you truly want to move forward, read this book. It is truly a game changer. This is a book I will read repeatedly.

I have been waiting for this book to come out for over six months. Dr. Benjamin Hardy is one of the most remarkable and prolific writers today. He has figured out how we can create the person we have always wanted to become. In his new book, the message is very clear: Every one of us is capable of creating a bigger, brighter and bolder future. Of course, this is not miraculously easy-peasy. Through amazing stories, science-tested and meticulous research, Dr. Hardy provides a crystal clear road map and lays out the process. "PERSONALITY ISN'T PERMANENT" CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

Ben takes the reader on a journey, a journey that helps you understand how you currently look at your life, what is possible if you change the view of your life, and then follows up with the suggested steps and actions on how to improve your life. The section of the book that impacted me the most is in the area of journaling. Journaling has been a part of my life for many years and now, and with the assistance of Ben and his book, I have taken my journaling to a whole new level. The daily setup for journaling, the journaling itself, and the focus on my future self, both in my thoughts and self-talk, have set me on a path to new areas of learning and achievement that I never really considered before. Add this book to your library, apply the techniques and questions that Ben suggests within the text into your daily life, and you too will see how dramatically the future outlook of your life improves and the excitement level to pursue it increases as well.

Ben has written an amazing book that is life changing. The book is clear, straightforward and breaks many of the myths that hold us back from living the life we want to live. So often we get in our own way and/or get stuck in the past. Ben provides actionable ways to reframe your past as something that happens for you not to you. He helps you see and connect to your future self - the person you will become. By connecting and living from your future self the future is always bigger, better and more powerful then the past. You have an exciting future to look forward to and live into. Set backs become temporary annoyances not debilitating. I believe if many more of us started living into our future the world would be a better place. I highly recommend this book to help you be the person you are capable of becoming.

People don’t respond to the world. They respond to their representation of the world. It is the internal representation of events but not the events themselves that dictate one’s behaviors. For me, personality is a product of (or is actually one in the same as) one’s internal representation of the world. This book will makes you take a hard look at tour belief system, at the lens through which you view the world. If you polish your lens, your outlook will be different. As a result, your actions will change and, naturally, you will experience different consequences as a result of those actions. Trust the process. Read the book. Change your life.

Are You Passive or Active in Developing the Personality you Desire?
Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2020
There is a season for everything and at some point, all of us should ask ourselves if we are actively or passively living our lifes. In a world that seeks to define every move we make, selling us cheap identities and over promised hype about how a product, service or experience will improve our life, it is refreshing to hear a counter cultural perspective on what really makes us tick as human beings. We are not forever boxed in and doomed to be the same person, with the same tastes, same outcomes, same flaws as we’ve always experienced. Rather, we are conscious beings with the ability to evolve into the person we desire to become.
Ben, is brilliant in his mix of data, story and exercises for rewriting your story with the character you desire to be. Thank you Ben for bringing life back into living!

I usually never take the time to write reviews but this book has been very profound to me (and I have read a LOT of self development books) that I would gladly share my experience.
I really like how this book brings a very pragmatic perspective on uncomfortable topics - and the stories illustrated makes it very easy to relate.
Written in a very digestable and lighthearted style (with yet a lot of research evidence), it actually helped me change my perspective on the past, and made me realize how much I was very attached to my previous experiences and being an INFJ. Ultimately limiting myself in what I thought was possible for me.
I also found the coaching questions after each section very useful. I rarely take the time to do the exercises but I did and I still do the work every single morning).
Definitely recommend to people who want to expand their perspective of whats possible to them and are overly attached to the past.

Our past does not define our future
Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2020
This book was hard for me to put down. I enjoy Dr. Hardy’s writing style which is well written and an easy and actionable read. I am someone in the 90% of people who do not like their personality test results – so this book brought a welcome message that my personality is not defined by these tests and it is not permanent. The book’s information, message, and reflection questions will be helpful to anyone seeking self-improvement, to understand their personality, how to change it, and how to reach your full potential and future self. While I recommend everyone to read the book, it is a must read for students in high school and college and those in early career because it will set them on the right path to reframe their past and design their future. I honestly would have liked this information a long time ago, but glad to have it now. It’s a fresh perspective and one that will make a long-term difference and likely become a timeless classic.

Things to think about and things to do
Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2020
I gave this book five stars, and I have one reservation about doing that. You see, like all his books, this one requires you to actually *do* something. Just buying it isn't going to change anything. Nor is just reading it. You actually have to DO things. Fortunately Ben -- we've never met but I call him Ben anyway -- makes it pretty clear what to do. He shows you that you are not stuck with the "personality" that you think you have, that your past doesn't define you, that you can have hope, that the future can be what you choose to make it. This is all good stuff.

The basic premise of this book: "Goals drive and create change," permanently altered my life and worldview.
Not only have I now set some amazing goals for myself, I have also inspired others to do the same via my e-mail list -- I'm a personal trainer and put out a "healthy tips and positive thinking" newsletter. I've read, and will continue to read, a large array of self-help titles, but this one made a huge impact.
We don't have to think of ourselves as being limited by our past, or our fears. Instead we can envision any future we'd like and stride boldly towards it.

Ben covers many good and useful things but to me was the reframing and how we look at the negatives the will always occur in life, to change our perspective from being done to you to being done for you. This book is timely thinking of all the unrest we are seeing as it exposes the old mind set of being victims. This book gives us a more accurate way to look at life.

Dr Hardy poured a lot of himself into this fantastic book, full of wisdom, great references, tough exercises, and amazing quotes.
Now it’s my turn to validate what Dr Hardy worked on so hard for so long, helping me get a head start in a future Luca who has been in the making for a very long time, such a long time that it seems like time stopped.
Thank you Ben for giving me a new set of eyes, and helping me understand that what I though was a growth mindset had effectively been stunted by my own past self and his evil twin, the present self, foolishly unaware that future self needed space in order to break free.
