Game Theory 101: The Complete Textbook is a no-nonsense, game-based introduction to both strategy form (matrix) and large game tree (game tree) games. From the very first lesson until the final, this book introduces complex games and will teach the game theory tools needed to deal with the problems. It is quick, effective and straight to the point, Game Theory 101: The Complete Textbook is ideal for students studying Game Theory, Intermediate Microeconomics as well as political science.

I bought and read this book in the Kindle edition. In fact, I did it for illustrating with a good guide and easy examples my lectures (I'm not an expert in this field but I had to teach it as part of an introductory course in modeling and simulation, so I had to resort to the clearer guide available). Fortunately, William Spaniel is very clear for transmitting the ideas behind the game theory and for addressing an issue that seems easy but it is as complex as the amplitude of topics it covers. In sum, he saved me.
One more thing: At the end of the book, the author speaks of the tools that the book gives you, classifying them in an "introductory level." But, be cautious, introductory doesn't mean easy. You have to read and re-read many times some topics in order to understand them. The best part, in this case, it is that at last you get a comprehensive background for recognizing the difference between --to say it in some way-- the game and the theory.
Good work. Highly recommended.

Excellent textbook, explains game theory extremely well. I am a visual learner, and often have a difficult time learning from textbooks. This book easily and clearly explained what I needed to know about game theory and was a major tool that helped me in my classes. There is a mixture of everyday applications of game theory to large scale applications, and having both of these is extremely helpful to any student. Also, reading this textbook while watching his YouTube videos is a great idea if you're struggling to understand this subject. Excellent textbook, incredibly well-written, and I would highly recommend this textbook to any student, professor, or casual learner of game theory!

This is a useful and practicable book on game theory. I have never studied Game Theory before and yet I found this book easy to follow; but it does require some effort and thinking. I do recommend signing up with Udemy.com and taking the course. The book and the course compliment each other. The course doesn't have all of the examples as the book, but the explanations are clear and helpful. The real-world examples in the book are useful for the student, which I found helpful when thinking about how to apply a matrix paradigm and the thought process that applies to the situation being evaluated.

This is a wonderfully written and clear presentation of game theory and some of the math formulas. It is excellent for non-math experts, but does require some basic understanding of algebra. I connects the logic of game theory with classic game examples. The math give the reader a sense of how calculations are made -the rationale and some of the assumptions and limitations of game theory.

I tried studying Game Theory about 6 years ago and gave up because I wasn't understanding the way the math was presented. I gained interest again recently for some reason and decided to give this book a try. Well I just finished reading the entire book and viewing the accompanying YouTube videos. The concepts still aren't always easy, but William Spaniel does a great providing well-written step-by-step instructions with so you can follow exactly what is going on. I'm sure it wasn't William's intention to provide a math class, but the instructions were so thorough that I really brushed up on my math as a side effect of the course. I also find that I'm instinctively thinking about everyday decisions a little deeper that I was prior to reading the book.
Needless to say I highly recommend this book to anyone interest in learning Game Theory. The low price of the book and the high quality of information within it provides a payoff that makes the decision to buy a no-brainer :-)

This is a great introductory text (with accompanying videos) to build a solid foundation of knowledge to apply to international relations, in my case, or to whatever discipline you choose.
Prior to purchasing this text, I was having trouble with more advanced applications, having failed to build this foundation on my own. I used this text to fill gaps and move forward.
My advice for novice game theorists to start here and save themselves some time. Build a foundation fast, and shorten the distance from noise to knowledge to useful application.

The ideal balance of accessibility of content and technical detail.
Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2015
To complement his popular YouTube channel, Mr. Spaniel's text presents a clear and concise treatment of the most important elements of Game Theory. It is the ideal introductory text, especially for those interested in the field without the appropriate mathematical background to get a good value out of more advanced texts from Fudenberg and Tirole or Young and Zamir. It is not devoid of mathematics, however, as the field is quantitative by nature, but the author does a superior job of making the ideas tangible by providing several fairly simple examples to demonstrate the important mechanics. For this reason, it is ideal for self-paced learning.

I am currently taking a course in Game Theory, and this book (and video series) is the key to connecting all the dots for me. While my regular lectures are fine, they lecturers tend not to think in terms of somebody trying to learn the subject matter.
Some people have the teaching knack, while others don't. The author of this book has it, and you get to enjoy the benefits!
The author has an eye towards having you learn Game Theory in a meaningful and substantial fashion. He walks you through the various concepts, and manages to do with an efficiency and style that takes all the stress and effort out of it.

Very nice work. Thanks so much to the author for his efforts. I bought the $3.99 ($1 price increase) version. [The author responds to comments on his blog. He told me the proice went up to $3.99 when he added the third chapter. Good for those with the $2.99 version to know.] Still a bargain. What is nice is that once I bought it, Amazon has an app that let's me download it again (for free) to my iPod Touch. Perfect level for short seminar that I may give soon to retired folks as a supplement.
I gave it a high rating because it is an excellent job for what it is. It is not intended as a mathematical treatise on the subject. You will still want to read it with pencil and paper at hand as you would with any technical subject matter.

My professor of game theory was really outstanding, But, He is little bit presumptuous in that he frequently used log functions to get the best response, which I would never know where it comes from. However, with this book, I can figure out how to get the best response in the pay-off matrix unlike other peers in my class. The only thing I can say is that I was batter off with this book. Although the result of the midterm exam didn't come out, but, given the time I had been doing Facebook, or reading Harvard Business Review(Odd Habit?) instead of focusing on the class, It's certain I performed well, because I solved all questions . Anyway, I wanna desperately recommend this book for someone like me.

It's a great book, don't be afraid of the math
Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2017
An amazing introduction to the principles of game theory. Now, for some, the heavy emphasis of probability calculations might turn some people off, but I recommend rewritting many of the earlier calculations on loose-leaf, so you can at least follow Spaniel's logic. After following a through a handful of earlier calculations, the later ones become much easier to follow, and you can read through the rest of the book much easier. While there are a fair number of symbols used, the math doesn't really require more than a basic understanding of math to follow.

Great textbook for bachelor and master students
Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2013
I had taken game theory in my masters program. I wish this one book was available to me 10 years ago. It solves many problems in full details. (Please don't go by one poor review. Whatever he claims are absent are actually present in lesson 1. There are lots of applications throughout the book. Game theory cannot be understood without examples and applications.)
The book is a must have for anyone who wants to dive at various levels of game theory.
The book builds gradually from simple concepts to advanced concepts in a spoon-feeding fashion.
Its been 10 years since I had lost touch and this book not just refreshed my concepts, but also proved that if a book is well written then anyone can be made to understand difficult subject like game theory. After reading this one book you will not feel that game theory is only for the elite or cannot be re-learnt after completing college.
Once you cover lesson 1, you will be covering lots of lessons quickly because your fundamentals and foundations will be already very strong.
Though I had some exposure in game theory (10 yrs ago), I am confident that anyone not exposed to this theory will equally understand and internalize the concept from this book.
