Kirk S. Lippold
Front Burner: Al Qaeda’s Attack on the USS Cole
Audible Audiobook – Unabridged
Commander Kirk S. Lippold USN (Ret.) (Author, Narrator), Blackstone Audio, Inc. (Publisher)
On the 12th of October on, 2000, at around 11:18 a.m. the 8400-ton destroyer called the American Ship Cole was rocked by a huge explosion. The captain of the ship, Kirk Lippold, watched as tiles fell off the ceiling, mugs of coffee smashed onto the ground, while everything that wasn't bolted down seemed to be floating in mid-air. Lippold was aware within a few seconds of knowing that Cole was attacked. He was unaware of how quickly his world had changed around him.
Eleven months later, he was questioned in the CIA and informed about Osama bin Laden. It was a strange coincidence that this meeting took place in the early morning of September 11th 2001. In a scene to be a perfect fit for a film and at the conclusion of the meeting in the early morning regarding the imminent threat of al-Qaeda, Kirk remarked, "I don't believe that America comprehends. I think it's going to require a pivotal event, perhaps in the United States, where hundreds of thousands, if not millions, will have be killed before Americans are aware that we're fighting this person." Just a few seconds later, the plane hit at the World Trade Center. It was the CIA agent who was debriefing him later said, "Kirk, I can't believe you said what you did this morning."
The fact is, it wasn't as unbelievable as it seems: Lippold had known for more than 11 months before the majority of Americans that al-Qaeda was in the war against America. The story was not told until today.
In this gripping first-person account, Lippold reveals the details of his terrifying encounter leading a group of brave sailors in the most deadly assault of the American ship since the year 1987. The author also explains how the incident was obscured by the events of 9/11 and then brushed aside by politicians and bureaucrats who then tried to put the blame for the incident to Lippold himself, depriving him of advancement and ultimately sabotaging his career.
A vital volume that should be alongside the Looming Tower, Ghost Wars along with the 9/11 Commission Report, this book retells the story of a pivotal event that's been hidden in the fog of conflict against terror.
Commander Kirk S. Lippold, USN (Ret. ) was the commander on the American ship Cole at the time it was targeted by al Qaeda in the port of Aden, Yemen, in October 2000. His crew stood out following the attack by rescuing the ship and it is still in use to this day. He was awarded numerous military decorations and was discharged from the Navy in 2007.

Front Burner very well written!

The twentieth anniversary of the attack on the USS Cole is coming this October 12th. Many of us have forgotten about this attack on our Navy by Al Qaeda Terrorists but not the author, Commander Kirk S. Lippold. (Ret.) USN. Seeing him on one of the cable channels recently enticed me to acquire this book and attempt to fully understand this event. It will take the Non-Navy, reader fifty-nine pages to determine what the title of the book represents.
This very well written and easy to understand book will bring the reader into the attack on the 1 billion dollar state of the art USS Navy Guided Missile Destroyer, Cole (DDG-67), where 17 United States sailors died and over 37 were injured. The second half of the book relates to the aftermath of the event with the human and material costs of the loss. As one reads this book awareness of damage and casualties to the USA during the Clinton administration is apparent. It also explains what happened afterwards and the poor support the ship's commander and his crew received from the administration. This event cost US Taxpayers over 250 Million in repairs plus unknown efforts and losses to personnel and time.
The book provides a poignant view from a commanding officer’s perspective and his personal thoughts and feelings as the events occurred and as to the on goings after an “attack of war “on his vessel. Although I do not support the force security actions of the captain as he entered the port of Aden and the refueling of the vessel, the reader will appreciate his actions and feelings through the remainder of the ordeal.
It is very interesting to read the Navy nor DOD did not take punitive action against Commander Lippold under UCMJ. His Naval Academy graduation and prior service to the SECNAVY may have been an influence on this outcome but he was not allowed to progress in rank to Captain prior to his retirement several years later. One needs to read the epilogue to understand what transpired at the highest levels that prevented his captaincy, a story in itself. The Navy and DOD used this incident to increase force security training against terrorist attacks from the sea. Sounds like a bureaucratic fix the government uses even today as an excuse for malfeasance.
Gripping and Honest Portrayal of Sailors at War - and Sadly, of Military Bureaucracy

Author Kirk Lippold, the captain of USS Cole when terrorists attacked her in Aden, writes of how he and the crew fought to save her, how Cole's senior leadership fought to keep them together and build morale in the aftermath of the attack, and how he had to fight Navy bureaucracy to do right by the crew - and eventually fight for his own reputation. This well-written page turner, human in focus, meticulous in research and honest regarding the shortfalls of all parties concerned, including those of the author, is must-reading. Highly recommended!

THIS IS A MUST READ BOOK! Both for historical reasons and for insights into gross failures on the part of the Intelligence community, 'Big' Navy, DOD and the Administrations of Clinton and Bush. This book does not read like a thriller or like a superbly crafted novel from Clancy or the like. It reads like a warrior wrote it, trying to tell the story of not only what he went through, but what Officers, Chiefs and Enlisteds who served as his crew went through. It reads like what it is - a real view of what the man went through, and what he saw his crew went through. Kirk's narrative comes across genuine and real. He doesn't seem like a monolithic hero carved of granite. He comes across as what he is - a GOOD CO who got put into a bad situation and brought his crew through. And THAT, ultimately is what this book is about - a recording of what his crew did and a memorial to what they went through and what they did.
I am in a unique position to comment on Front Burner. At the time of the Cole murders (the attack in Yeman) I was assigned as the Strike and Surface Warfare assistant at Commander Destroyer Squadron TWO TWO - the Cole's Immediate Superior In Command (ISIC). I knew and know Kirk Lippold and I was not only privy to many of the events described in the book, I knew and know several of the crew of the Cole.
Part of our duty as ISIC was to arrange, facilitate, oversee and certify the training and inspections she and the rest of COMDESRON TWO TWO's 8 ships went through during the workups and preparations for deploying. As a result I had dealt with Kirk and a number of the people mentioned in Front Burner. We (slowly) found out some of what was mentioned, but I've even learned some things about the attack that I did not know.
I cannot do this book, or that crew of the COLE justice. You must read it. This was the first salvo in the 'long war' and their story NEEDS not only to be told, it MUST BE HEARD!

A riveting book on the first event of the War on Terror
Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2014
Written by the man who singlehandedly saw the attack of the USS Cole from a completely different perspective than any other, Front Burner is a fantastic book. Where better to read straight from the commander himself than this book. The events leading up to the attack in Aden are page-turners and makes you feel connected to the crew like nine other. This book is a great read for those interested in current events, terrorism, Navy history and often times how BIG government can get in the way of glory.
The only complaint I had was the constant use of Navy-ese and areas around the ship. If you don't have prior sailing or naval experience, this book may be confusing at times.

This is the book that predates what we live now. Kirk, in this book, shows what it means to be a leader not just when times are good but also when all is turning to hell and people look to the bloke in charge. I wonder if he is one of the finest Admirals that the US Navy never had. The book is a candid and forthright blow by blow experience that allows us to live in the shoes of the people that protect us. In a lot of ways the Cole embodies our transition from a world at peace to a world at war.....before we even new that this was the case. Before you read anything on Iraq, ISIL, Afghanistan or Terrorism, read this we were warned.....we just missed it. Guys like Kirk will ensure that never happens again.

This book was extremely well written. I am coming from an interesting perspective in reading this book. I am the spouse of one of the ships crew at the time of the attack. I believe Commander Lippold did an amazing job of sharing the stories of the ship and its crew as well as his personal thoughts and feelings as the events occured. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in military history, history in general and also to many of us who look for books that provide a human connection. Lippold shares the stories of his crew and their stuggles in a way I think many thought would never happen. History only survives if someone shares the stories; thank you for sharing the stories.

As a former crew member who served onboard the USS COLE during the time of the attack, I cannot express deeply enough my gratitude for the effort CDR Lippold made to so expertly record the history of this event. This is a book I look forward to passing down to my children so they understand the heritage of their family. While I am able to bring to my mind the exact faces behind the names and the views of the spaces referred in the book, I also feel that the book is easily understood by those without Navy experience. My wife enjoyed the book just as much as I did. The book is not a simple list of facts in chronological order, but rather, it is the story of the emotions and effort that went into saving the ship and our shipmates.
The key to this book is that the dead and wounded who served onboard the COLE are finally given a heroes place. They were men and women who laid down their life on behalf of their country and they deserve our gratitude. Before 9/11 there was 10/12.

Front Burner is a riveting story of Command at Sea and triumph of the officers and crew of the USS COLE as they faced down enormous adversity to overcome Al Qaeda's opening salvo, save their ship, and set in motion a sequence of events with enduring consequence for the Navy and the nation.
Commander Kirk Lippold, Commanding Officer of the USS COLE, provides an essential accounting of this seminal event with perspective, insight, and grit as only a ship's Captain engaged in battle could. He transports us right to the deck of the COLE where the crew heroically races with textbook damage control proficiency to save the ship and their shipmates. At the same time, he interleaves a timeless retrospective on leadership, accountability, and steely resolve pitted against weak institutional fortitude and fatally flawed intelligence processes at the dawn of the age of Al Qaeda.
Much more than recounting a singular incident, Front Burner exposes critical faults in our political, defense, and security systems that allowed Al Qaeda's successful suicide attacks not only on COLE, but also at on 9/11. Underpinning COLE's story, as later on 9/11, we witness systemic failures that set the conditions for strategic surprise - the absence of advance warning, deficient defense preparedness, and miscalculated threat and intentions. In the all-too-predictable rush to judgment and the events of the ensuing decade, we are left to ponder the slow hands of justice, the enduring personal and professional sacrifices, and the continuing need for persistent vigilance, preparedness, and purposeful intelligence.
Front Burner secures for posterity a critical victory that the courage, discipline, determination, and perseverance of Lippold and his crew ultimately delivered for the nation. Read the book, listen to the CD, and experience a raw and riveting leadership journey.

I had no idea the details of this horrible attack. Commander Kirk Lippold and his crew are all hero's as far as I am concerned. My heart goes out to all the victims who lost their lives and those who were injured not to mention their family members. I have read reviews about Commander Lippold writing this book for his own personal gain, HOGWASH! The military kept this incident as much of a secret as they possibly could. Had it not been for the courage of Commander Lippold and his tight knit crew this disaster could have been much worse. My hat is off to Commander Lippold for writing this masterpiece in revealing the true events leading up to 9/11 attack. I truly believe if our military wasn't so worried about making themselves look bad and used this incident to focus on what is really going on right under our nose. Of course, it's all hind sight now but, had the military taken this incident more serious I believe 9/11 attack would not have happened! This may be pure speculation but, it's my opinion! Again, I rate this book 5 STAR!

Americans were totally shocked when this great ship was attacked successfully by what were identified as Muslim Terrorists.
There were a lot of oversights and omissions concerning the why of how the COLE wound up visiting that port. Refueling was the proposed intent, but with all the "intelligence" available to the U.S., how the leadership in the Navy could have permitted this ship to enter the harbor and dock there, it is simply inexcusable that this visit was permitted.
We have become a nation of intimidated people, one which also has elected and appointed leaders who will not do their job. I; for one, feel we need a complete scrub, from the top down to identify those directly in the line of command and control over such movement actions, and then we need to have the courage to make the changes in that structure as we find necessary.
But add axeFront Burner, deniability, CYA, accountable political intervention???

The details of the attack on the USS Cole like watching it in slow motion within your minds eye. The event took seconds to happen, but a decade to unfold. Sometimes political policy can and does trump national security. There many casualties in this book, the seamen and women obviously, but the politics and agenda of people who no longer seem to care about us as a nation, instead CYA. It was someone else that f up, not my agency. There's more than enough blame to share, but are we learning anything from the loss of so many patriots, by bystanders and collateral damage of human life???

My husband was a Chief on the Cole when she got bombed in Yemen. When I first heard that Capt. Lippold had written a book about the bombing, I was appalled. How dare he profit from the sailors lost. I of course then thought I need to read this book and understand actually what the entire crew went through as my husband was, and still is hush hush about it, feeling guilty. I found the book in my mailbox today and read the entire thing within 3 hours. I could not put it down. I would suggest that everyone read this book. It is written for everyone to understand. It certainly brought me back to October 12, 2000, and knowing what the entire crew did to save the ship. God bless the sailors and their families.

This book was loaned to us by a Marine friend to my husband to read. Instead, his wife read it! I was interested in
knowing more about a naval ship command, since my husband had command of an oil/ammunition and stores ship in the Mediterranean Sea at an earlier era. There were some similar experiences, but what I read was about the clear mind and the clear judgement the captain must have to make decisions "under fire". This book gave me a good insight on what a sea command is about and the captain's responsibilities are to protect his ship and the crew. I received
a lot more by learning about the hellacious act perpetuated on The Cole. I remembered this incident, but really didn't
know the ramifications or the details. If you like real action, real history and non-stopping drama, this is the book for you!

Outstanding read- impossible to put down. Most impressive was Lippold's brutally honest self assessment. After reading in painful detail what the outstanding crew of the Cole endured in the aftermath of the attack I convinced more than ever that the Al-Queda mastermind of the plot- al-Nashiri- cannot meet his maker soon enough. Commander Lippold and the brave dedicated crew of the Cole won a victory for all Americans through their brave struggle, thankfully the likes of which most of us will never have to endure. This American owes a debt of gratitude to the brave Captain and crew of the USS Cole including those 17 brave sailors who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting our nation in a land far away. This should be required reading for all Americans.

I give this book 5 stars because I thought Commander Lippold not only had us vividly relive the incident as it happened, but he exposed the political decisions made by the DoD, the Federal government and Senator Warner to be nefarious. I don't believe the American public had the whole picture of this tragic incident and I have never been more ashamed of the Navy for their cowardly treatment of CDR Lippold and the Cole crew. A must read for every patriotic American.

Excellent account of the failure of Senior National Leadership to adequately equip their field Commanders with the tools, in this case Intel, essential to effectively perform the missions they are entrusted with.
CDR Lippold is to be commended for leading his crew so admirably under the most difficult situations a man o' war can experience. It is certainly disappointing to learn that a Congressmen, along with the Senior Officers in his chain of command, could be so gutless when the time came to advance this battle tested Officer's career.
