The Catalyst: How to Change Anyone's Mind
Audible Audiobook – Unabridged
Jonah Berger (Author), Keith Nobbs (Narrator), Fred Irby (Narrator), Simon & Schuster Audio (Publisher)
4.6 out of 5 stars
"Jonah Berger is one of those rare thinkers who blends research-based insights with immensely practical guidance. I am grateful to be one of the many who have learned from this master teacher." (Jim Collins, author of From Good to Great co-author built to last)
The author of New York Times best-selling books The Contagious And The Invisible Effect comes a groundbreaking method to change anyone's mind.
Everyone has something they would like to change. Marketers wish to alter their customers' mindsets, and leaders wish to transform the way they run their businesses. Start-ups want to revolutionize industries, while nonprofits wish to transform the world. However, change isn't easy. It is common to persuade, push and pressure and yet nothing happens. What is the alternative method?
The book follows a different method of approaching. Effective change agents understand that they don't have to push more, or providing more details but rather being an active catalyst. Catalysts take away roadblocks and decrease the obstacles to change. Instead of asking "How could I change someone's mind?" They pose a different question: "Why haven't they changed already? What's stopping them?"
The Catalyst is a comprehensive guide to the main obstacles to changing and provides ways to reduce the impact of them. Learn how catalysts can change minds even in the most challenging of situations, including how hostage negotiators convince people to show their hands in the air and how marketers can get new products accepted and how leaders change the culture of their organizations and how activists can ignite social movements and how addiction counselors assist addicts in recognizing they're suffering as well as how canvassers for political causes alter deeply-rooted political beliefs.
This book is written for anyone looking to create the process of change. It offers a powerful way of thinking as well as a variety of methods that could produce extraordinary results. It doesn't matter if you're trying to change the behavior of a single person, change an entire organization, or change the way that an whole industry conducts business The book will show you how to be an effective catalyst.
NOTE: If you purchase this book and the accompanying PDF, it will be accessible within the Audible Library along with the audio.
Respect, Understanding and Peace

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
As a court-appointed and private practice mediator, I wish everybody would read this book. The world would be a much better and more peaceful place if that ever came true.
The process of mediation requires parties to change their stance from dwelling on their grievance to mutually problem-solving where the problem is the dispute. The barriers to changing people’s minds for selling or other demands described in this book also exist in mediation. I doubt that in all the books I’ve read on meditation techniques added to all the continuing education courses I’ve taken, that I’ve read better descriptions of these barriers and how to address them than in this book.
This book’s relevance extends well beyond sales or politics but into every aspect of your life. People who finish a basic mediation course lasting 40 hours almost universally report that the techniques they learned have made their work and family lives better and more harmonious. Here you can save yourself 40 hours and between $600 and $1,000 by both reading and practicing the methods the author presents so well here.
Please understand that understanding isn’t the same as the application. Many people take the basic courses but then can’t apply what they’ve been exposed to. Others can and do but only in their private lives which is likely less difficult than in a formal mediation setting. So realize that learning how to overcome barriers to resolution isn’t easy peasy for most and impossible for some. Techniques such as the most valuable reframing are often vastly difficult to impossible for many to master.
So while the information you need to be the catalyst the author uses as a metaphor for being an agent of change exists within this book and therefore is accessible to all, application of the needed techniques will come in varying degrees to different people. Still, everybody will gain at least some insight into getting people to reconsider their attitudes or positions and so my wish that everybody on this planet read this book. I don’t mean read it to gain power over others but to understand why people dig in to their positional stances.
With understanding comes respect for those positions which you may consider dysfunctional while those holding them view as sacred. Respect and understanding equal peace. It’s a better way to live.
It's easy for me to give this book my highest recommendation.

Easily One of the GREATEST Books On Persuasion (without Persuasion) I've Ever Read!
Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2020
A lot of people think persuasion is about "convincing" or giving better ideas to change someone's mind.
This book proves... it's not.
It's about allowance, recognizing barriers to change, contextual nuance and simply making space that would otherwise hinder the magic conversion from happening.
The ideas are subtle yet profound and it has helped me formulate ideas I've understood since forever but had a hard time putting into words.
Others were things I understood happened but not the granular WHY they happened.
This changes everything and I encourage anyone and everyone interested in selling ideas or concepts, but who hate convincing others to read it.

How to encourage others to persuade themselves
Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2020
If you've tried, without success, to cross divides of beliefs and understanding, pick up this book and become a catalyst for change. In Berger's definition, a catalyst is someone who persuades others by removing the barriers to agreement, encouraging people to persuade themselves. The book is fun to read, with a good balance of research and stories. More importantly, it reveals important practices of effective communication in divided world.

Great book about how to help a person change!
Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2020
I found The Catalyst, by Jonah Berger, to have a thorough and helpful explanation around how to lower the barriers to change. While the book could be useful for a sales representative or someone in business, the ideas also lend themselves very well to parents trying to get their child to change. It was helpful to find that the book included a section on addiction where change is so needed. The book explained how a person struggling with substance use might be more willing to change when professionals and others who can be objective, are involved in the process. The more a person can have an understanding of the change process and the barriers that get in the way, the better chance that change will occur. I found this book to be well written and interesting.

After reading Contagious, I felt the need to buy Invisible Influence and The Catalyst. I love Jonah Bergers writing style. Very easy read. Each topic is broken down by chapters and each chapter is full of real world studies and examples. I have recommended all three of these books to many people now. Whether you work in advertising/marketing, own a business, or just have a genuine interest in the human psyche...these books are absolutely worth owning. Stop reading my review already and buy it. As a matter of fact, order multiples, so you can give some away. After I read them I immediately went back and bought more so I can keep copies to give to people. That's how good they are.
This a must read for organizational change agents
Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2020
This is a must read for anyone trying to influence change in large complex organizations. Jonah does a great job of pointing out that the classic approach of just pushing harder for change and trying to convince people just results in greater resistance to the change that you would like to see. Instead if you really want to influence change you need to take the time to understand the reasons people are resisting the change and work to remove or lower those barriers. He does a great job of highlighting the typical barriers to change including approaches to reduce the resistance. Jonah also includes entertaining case studies that help put the theories into a practical context. It is a quick easy read with very practical insights.

Among the blizzard of books that publish each year this is one book you should read.
Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2020
The title may refer to changing minds, but the real value of this book is its ideas on just how to talk to people. Reading this book reminded me of the old line that “It’s not what you say, but how you say it”. Think about all the people you have met over the years. Which became your friends? Those who paid genuine attention to your feelings and opinions even if they might disagree with you. Or those who ignored and/or criticized your thoughts and feelings and talked about their own ideas as the only the “right” way to think.
The book mostly uses business examples. But the basics can be applied to non-business situations just as well.

HALL OF FAMETOP 1000 REVIEWERVINE VOICE
"If you want to truly understand something, try to change it." Kurt Lewin
Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2020
Years ago while in Washington (DC), I attended a reception for the new English ambassador to the U.S. and at one point engaged in conversation with one of his aides. I asked him to share his thoughts about effective diplomacy. "Letting the other chap have it your way."
I thought of that response as I began to work my way through Jonah Berger's latest book. He cites Lewin's comment, adding, "But the reverse is also true. To truly change something, you need to understand it." As is his SOP, Berger competed wide and deep research on what is often chracterized as the art and science of persuasion.
In Rhetoric, Aristotle examines four levels of discourse: exposition (explain with information), description (make vivid with compelling details), narration (explain a sequence of events), and argumentation (convince with logic and/or evidence). That was a while ago, In recent years, there have been dozens of excellent books in which their authors share other thoughts about persuasion.
Berger's approach sets his book apart from the others. It is conceivable that what he recommends could operate at three or even four of the levels. He introduces a change agent that he identifies as a catalyst. These are the catalyst's defining characteristics:
o REACTANCE: Catalysts "allow for agency and encourage people to convince themselves."
o ENDOWMENT: "To ease endowment, catalysts surface the costs of inaction and help people realize that doing nothing isn't as costless as it seems."
o DISTANCE: "Perspectives that are too far away fall in the region of rejection and get discounted, so catalysts shrink distance, asking for less and switching the field."
o UNCERTAINTY: "To get people to un-pause, catalysts alleviate uncertainty. Easier to try means more likely to buy."
o CORROBORATING EVIDENCE: "Catalysts find corroborative evidence, using multiple sources to help overcome the translation problem."
Note: It is impossible to exaggerate the importance, when communicating, of making certain that your intended meaning is fully understood, with or without agreement. In a phrase, make your message crystal clear.
The acronym REDUCE will help you remember these five. Revealing them requires no spoiler alert. In a separate chapter for each, Berger thoroughly explains HOW to catalyze principled persuasion. Therein is perhaps the greatest value of his rigorous and eloquent narrative.
Each of Jonah Berger's books (and especially his latest) is reader-friendly. The five checklists provided in the Epilogue, for example, review how to help mitigate common barriers. Readers will also appreciate the dozens of stories included that anchor key insights in human experiences with which most readers can readily identify.
When encountering even the most difficult situations, people who have become effective catalysts know how to reveal the root cause(s) of resistance to change, then reduce roadblocks to resolution or determine that the given situation cannot be resolved. The value of developing these skills is incalculable within as well as beyond the workplace.

Jonah Berger mixes an admirable concoction of experiments, observations, and social issues to show how the minds of even bigots can be changed. In a polarized world, it's refreshing to read of practices than can bring people together and not drive them farther apart. He courageously uses LGBTQ and anti-Semitic examples to dramatize the extent of change possible. The references may offend some, but they're not meant to endorse positions so much as to show how even calcified attitudes and behaviors can be changed.

The trick is to keep all the tools in mind, but only practice can do that.
