The best thing about Jeff Lerner and his training system is that it is completely unique. Unlike many of my other teachers Jeff help me figure out what is the right for me to do before I start doing it. There was absolutely no doubt in my mind what I should do next.

The best self-help book since Stephen Covey
Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2021
In my opinion this is the best self-help book since Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. No hacks, no shortcut to nowhere but a comprehensive and systematic manual for living and flourishing as an authentic human being.
The book does a great job at mapping the science of self-discipline ( theory, principles and practices ) with a commitment to clarity and practicality , the author reminds us that self-discipline is the how and not the why.
The book goes further than offering a set of tools and techniques (don't worry, they are all there). Skillfully Dienstmann helps me (the reader) identify my deepest values which translates in my fundamental aspiration (bliss, dharma), so no tough talk about willpower , no pushing to keep climbing the ladder to find out it's against the wrong building. Self- discipline as the author tells us is about self-respect and self respect is the driving force to self actualization. The choice is simple to live a designed life or a conditioned one. This is the journey of a lifetime and now there is a guide book you can trust to get there.
The book is very well organized like a textbook (or a great travel guide) if I would recommend reading the whole thing it is not necessary since the table of content is comprehensive and easy to navigate, at the end of every chapter you will find a "Key Points" section that summarize as bullet points the substance of the chapter.
I have really enjoyed this book and I know it will be a companion for many years to come.

The Only Self Help Book I Ever Really Needed
Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2021
Over the years I have purchased MANY self-help books. After having purchased and read Mindful Self-Discipline by Giovanni Dienstmann I have come to realize that it is the only self-help book I ever really needed. As Mr. Dienstmann asserts……..it’s all about self-discipline. Without self-discipline, what good is the multitude of other self-help books (many unread) I have on my bookshelf? The 1st step in any process is actually getting started. You have to DO something. And that requires self-discipline. I have followed Giovanni Dienstmann for several years now. I purchased his Practical Meditation Book several years ago, but not surprisingly it has remained un-read. I never had the self-discipline to read it, much less establish a routine for Meditation. I am a recently retired school teacher and the sudden lack of daily routine in my life has not been beneficial to my overall well-being. Lots of time ? YES!!! Any plan on how to use it? Not Really! Why? I lack self-discipline. The removal of so much structured time in my life left a void. This book has really changed my outlook for the future. Mr. Dienstmann has written a very readable, insightful book on developing self-discipline in one’s life. The book is well structured with concepts that are explained in great detail. It is a step-by-step approach. As you read, it is plain to see the years of dedication the author has spent developing this practice in his own life and now he shares it with the reader. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. So well written. So insightful. So sincere.

I love this book because it a systematic guide on how to change the only thing that we can actually change in our lives - we can't change our genetics, the diseases to which our bodies and minds are predisposed, we can't change other people or their opinions, but we can certainly get lost in trying to change all of these other things that ultimately we have little to no power over. Meanwhile, we lose sight of the fact that the one thing that we have complete and total power over changing is our own mind. In fact, I think it is often presented as the only thing we can't change, which is tragically ironic. And this book breaks it down into digestible chunks, into portions that can be easily worked on and worked over until they're totally incorporated and then one can move onto the next chunk.
I'm grateful to have this book in my library and I'm certain that it's going to provide a lot of fodder for spiritual and emotional growth in the next several years. Thank you!

Tired of feeling regret and wishing there was an easy-to-follow manual to help you keep on track with your goals and aspirations? If this sounds like you, keep reading!
In this book, Giovanni takes us by the hand on a journey that encourages introspection and action, through the lens of self-discipline. His proposal is a harmonious approach that works as the baseline to surf our daily reality making conscious decisions that can lead to fewer regrets and purposeful living.
It starts by asking simple questions to the reader as an introduction to self-discipline, along with witty and spot-on quotes that continue to appear to pave the way for each chapter, engaging you to keep on going to find out more.
Whether you are familiar with the topic or not, you can appreciate the structure and flow of the book, which takes you from the basic concepts to more complex ones through the use of metaphors and examples that are easy to relate to, allowing you to understand and incorporate the material by doing the proposed work.
If you are looking for a quick read on the subject or cheats on how to be more disciplined, you may not enjoy this book. I believe it is meant to be a companion you can go back to at different stages of your life. There are interesting concepts and theories within the book, that’s for sure, but the biggest take-away is the step-by-step exercises and diagrams that call the reader to action. So, if you are willing to do the work just take it easy and take your time. Trust the process and enjoy the ride!

I’ve been struggling with a few bad habits and not sticking to a daily routine for a few years now. I’ve worked with coaches and books and accountability systems, but nothing seemed sustainable or compelling enough for my busy life.
This book provided the missing pieces I needed.
There are so many practical steps that helped me to sustain the focus, momentum and the self-respect that I needed to stay true to my deepest values.
I love that this approach is informed by mindfulness, self-compassion and embodied presence - rather than aggressiveness, rigidity or dogmatic thinking.
Now I’m feeling more empowered and inspired to build many new habits that will change the rest of my life. Thank you!

This book is TRULY improving my life!
Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2021
Mindful Self Discipline has given me so much insight and practical ideas for accomplishing my life goals. The book is well organized and easy to read.
It starts with methods to discover, define or refine your values and purpose referred to as your life aspirations. Then he shows how to move closer to your aspirations with planning and self-discipline. Then it covers awareness with the three practices of meditation, reflection and integration. Willpower is also discussed in length, and how it is different from motivation as that is fleeting. The techniques for improving willpower with awareness are very effective.
Finally comes ACTION! Developing habits and getting more structure helps free your mind from countless minor decisions, like “should I exercise today because I don’t feel like it and it won’t hurt to skip it?” Instead, we re-connect with our aspiration and move forward, no matter what. Having more willpower gives your brain freedom to think about more useful things versus time spent ruminating and being indecisive.
Through the book there is emphasis on morning meditation to calm the mind to prepare for a purposeful day, then the need to pause several times during the day for staying grounded and evening reflection for noting “Have I made a step towards my aspiration or have I taken a step away from my aspiration?”. If we feel we have stepped away from our aspiration, we are encouraged not to shame ourselves but to see what can be learned and what are some of the “baby steps” we need to take next. Much of the book is about self-control, time management, and controlling distractions in your life.
One of my aspirations is to exercise daily. This commitment to myself is important for being healthy, attractive, and continuing quality of life as I get older. I am so pleased to say that I am now exercising daily!!! And it was actually easy to get into my routine using Giovanni’s techniques. I really enjoy exercising now, and the benefits that come from it.
I encourage everyone to get this book and begin exploring it as a way to clarify what is most important in one’s life and then organizing your life around that.

Want to live a life without regret and in alignment with your deepest values? This book is for you!
Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2021
This book taught me that self discipline can be POSITIVE and EMPOWERING, rather than restrictive. I think one of the reasons I had such low self-discipline in the past is because I perceived it as a negative/harsh restriction one puts on themselves, rather than an empowering skill of alignment and focus as expertly taught by Dienstmann, a highly experienced and classically trained meditation teacher.
Which leads me to my other point. Mindful Self Discipline (MSD) has helped me to greatly increase my ability to sustain focus (in work, during exercise, conversations, unpleasant tasks, etc.) and to ENJOY the process and experience of focused effort even when it's temporarily painful (e.g., exercise).
In the past, my aversion to the anticipated pain of focused effort led to severe procrastination and distraction. MSD teachings shifted my perception to actually look forward to the painful/boring tasks because I know they are +1's toward my goals and strengthening my self-discipline for the future. MSD has freed me from negative patterns and thoughts more profoundly than any other approach (therapy, antidepressants, meditation alone, willpower alone, affirmations, other self-care).
One concrete example: I'm much faster and relaxed during my daily runs since I stopped using music as a crutch to distract me from the pain/challenge of exercise. MSD taught me to enjoy the practice of focusing on the positive sensations and growth/benefits of running and I no longer feel like I have to fight/force my way through the last lap. I went from a 10-minute mile to under 8 minutes in one week, without any extra effort.
The program is positively reinforcing, which is perhaps its most powerful feature. By starting with baby steps, I saw tangible benefits almost immediately, which continue to grow exponentially with increased practice. The more I practice MSD, the more benefits I experience, and the more I enjoy deepening my practice. MSD organically builds and fuels itself with less and less effort needed over time. A little effort is required initially as with learning anything new, but the more I practice the simple techniques, the more it comes naturally and effortlessly without feeling challenging at all. It truly is empowering!
I recommend taking your time to absorb and implement the concepts and methods gradually. It's hard to put the book down because it is filled to the brim with valuable insights and techniques, but trust me, you will have more success by incorporating the teachings into your life more slowly. Also recommend using a highlighter to capture things that speak to you for easy future reference.
I also love how the author seamlessly integrates the most effective techniques from ancient mindfulness wisdom and modern behavioral science. It's really for people of all backgrounds, beliefs, skillsets, ages.
If you struggle with letting time and/or opportunities pass you by or you're not quite sure which steps or goals to prioritize in your daily life, this book is for you!

I'm a wellness coach and have training in behavior modification, goal setting, habit transformation, and changing your life. And I'm a self-help book junky. Yet, nothing-nothing!-has had this much influence on my own life. Even with my education, I was struggling, trying to get out of a deep rut. I couldn't put my own health in the forefront. I even let my business stagnate. I mean, who am I to help others when I'm so stuck. Not any more! There are so many practical tools in this book, and the process and pillars are perfectly organized and doable. But even more than that, so much of the advice and philosophy is written in a way that really fired up my passion again, and yet helped me realize that the work needed was not only possible, but was the ultimate in self-respect. The day after I started the book was the most energized and productive day I'd had in month. I can't recommend Mindful Self-Discipline enough. It's a game changer. It's a life changer!

The author does a phenomenal job of breaking down not only why people have a lack of self-discipline, but also ways to counteract your lizard brain, the part of you that simply seeks instant gratification. If you find yourself in a loop, in a cycle where you say you want to do something, but you simply can't get yourself to truly commit to it... then this book will really help you understand why that happens, and ways you can be conscious of these moments when they appear, and instead make the choices that align with your goals.
Do you want to be in control of your life? Do you actually want to pursue what you KNOW will bring you true fulfillment, or do you want to keep going down the same path where you fail yourself over and over again? Read the book. Do the lessons. Commit to this. You only get one life, understand that, truly reflect on that for a minute. You don't want it to be 5 years later and all you have is self loathing and regret.

I have been working through this book and really love it. The most important part
of it to me ( so far ) has been the fact that since beginning the book , it motivated me to have a non negotiable date with myself each morning upon rising to start the day first with a meditation. It has made such a difference to my life and in being more disciplined in my life. I notice changes - more laughter , more peace , a deeper sense of gratitude , more acceptance of the things I would normally feel angry about , the ability to humbly apologize when I lose my way, to hold my tongue or ask more clearly for what I need or want …. I recommend this book highly. Spend the time with this book , it will help you … and also give yourself the gift of meditating daily even if it’s only 15 minutes. You will notice a difference.

I read Giovanni’s Practical Meditation, and it was incredibly useful in exploring the many meditation options that are out there, in a systematic way. I was then able to choose a meditation practice that was best suited for myself. It saved me a lot of reading, researching, and frustration!
Like his previous book, Mindful Self-Discipline is very well researched, and organized.
It is a long book, but, written in a way that you can choose what you want to focus on. Giovanni gives meaningful context, practical exercises, and suggestions to implement one’s goals, in a way that works for each person reading the book.
As a psychiatric nurse, I like the integration of the spiritual, psychological, and neurological information that is used in the book, and helps the reader get the most from all these disciplines!
I find his way of approaching both spirituality and setting goals, very accessible and doable.
I will definitely be referencing Mindful Self Discipline frequently.
A Must-Read, Practical and Meditative Book
Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2021
Surprisingly, reading this beautifully-written book is a meditative experience in itself. With Giovanni Dientsmann's approach to developing the essential skill of self-discipline, it becomes a study in values and mindfulness with an emphasis on the spiritual side of life, not just the practicality of goals to be accomplished. However, as Giovanni conveys, those two things go hand in hand. This is a hefty book of 400 pages, requiring quite a bit of self-discipline to read. But reading it is also a pleasure, encouraging us to look at ourselves without judgment as we practice mindful awareness and self-reflection that can spur us to strengthen our willpower and take action. Giovanni writes with the sensibility of a monk and a yogi, all the while inspiring us to find our own inner monk. Yet in doing so, we do not retreat from the world but learn to engage with it mindfully, with increasing self-mastery.
The book is full of useful exercises which are thoughtfully indexed at the end of the book. This way you can go right to the exercises you might need, whenever you need to find them. There are helpful summaries at the end of every chapter. Giovanni also provides a helpful map in the introduction, highlighting the most important chapters for the impatient reader who wants to get to the heart of things immediately. I particularly appreciate the way Giovanni deftly summarizes a great deal of fascinating research on the brain and behavior so that we get the benefit of this knowledge without having to do the work of finding, reading, and assessing it ourselves.
I like the way Giovanni wants Mindful Self Discipline to become a movement. It's a quality that is sorely lacking today, in this world full of sound bytes, self-indulgence, superficiality, and distraction. As a highly accomplished friend of mine says, nothing gets accomplished without self-discipline. And as Giovanni says, if we all had more self-discipline, the world would be a better place, and our individual lives would be more fulfilling. A successful personal coach who helps clients develop self-discipline, Giovanni aptly says coaching is not for everyone—but this book is. Read it, study it, use it to become your own coach—and reap the rich rewards.

Mindful Self Discipline is a path to True Freedom

Mindful Self Discipline is the ultimate self discipline guide. Its framework is based on meditation, purpose and awareness. For me, this tied many notions together to make the path to self discipline and freedom more clear, achievable and exciting. The framing of self discipline with a mindfulness approach is key for me. Through the 1st pillar of Aspiration i am harmonizing my goals with all parts of myself, mindfully. Through the 2nd pillar of Awareness and skills i have been developing with mindfulness practice and meditation, and the PAW method, i know i can follow through with the third pillar, Action. This book is full of insights and instruction to mindfully improve my self discipline and focus and achieve my goals. It is full of inspirational notions such as the Power, Purpose, Peace diagram with the intersecting benefits of being focused, content, fearless and self-actualized. My own take-away is echoed by the quotes shown in Chapter 37. I strive for True Freedom and the good i can do in the world that it will enable, and to rule my mind instead of being ruled by it. This Mindful approach is really awesome!
