When Jeff left college with a law degree and six-figures of debt, he had plans of becoming a sports agent. (A law career just wasn’t his idea of fun and didn’t fit his personality).

My book arrived from Amazon the day before I left to go SCUBA diving in Bonaire with friends, so I brought it with me to read on the plane. Before I returned, I had read it cover-to-cover, very slowly, twice, meticulously underlining hundreds of need-to-remember passages.
This is the most important personal and professional book I've read in decades. For me it’s a true game-changer. It has caused me to rethink how I approach my business and work as a writer.
An exceedingly well-structured and well-written book, it skillfully blends the idea of strategic, purposeful networking with the central imperative to generously add value, giving over and over without expecting anything in return.
More than that, Robinett gives a wealth of specific how-to recommendations:
• How to use social media to nurture your network.
• How to put practical limits on your networking activities: the 5+50+100 rule.
• How to evaluate who you’re connected to.
• How to organize a system to keep track of existing relationships.
• How to “ask” for what you need.
• How to follow up after making contact.
• How to “work a room” at a public gathering.
• How to identify people you don’t want in your network.
• How to assess your own value as a network resource.
• How to approach a new contract.
And a lot more. I especially liked her insights about the differences between male and female networkers.
There is so much how-to “meat” about this vital subject that for me, it’s more than a how-to book. It’s a reference book. Before I adopt a tracking system, before I attend another conference, before I approach another high-profile influencer, I will reread the relevant chapters.
I honestly feel that people who are trying to succeed in business and who haven’t read the book are at a serious disadvantage. My advice: get your hands on a copy and read it at your earliest convenience.

Let me ask you a question. When someone mentions the work "networking" does it make you feel a bit icky? That's because a lot of people are doing it wrong. Maybe even yourself.
In How To Be a Power Connector, Judy explains the benefits of having a successful network, including her own story starting out as a shy social worker in Idaho and going on to serve as the CEO of both public and private companies and in management positions at Fortune 500 companies. She's now a leader in the Venture Capital world.
One of my biggest takeaways from her book is that to have a valuable network, you have to be strategic about building it. You know what else? You need to be sincere, and you actually need to help people. Judy's living proof of the effectiveness of that approach.
In the book Judy takes you on a step-by-step approach to building a profitable network and includes things like The top 5 blunders ineffective networkers make, why weak links are actually the strongest and most important connections in your network and why she detests elevator speeches.
The book also includes Judy's Top Ten networking tips and lots more than I can mention here.

My dad always told me, "It's not what you know, it's who you know." As happens occasionally, my dad was right. How to Be a Power Connector helps you to be strategic about your network and Rolodex (they still don't have a better word for Rolodex...). Judy Robinett shares her 5+50+100 rule for making sure you know who the key people in your network are and are interacting the way you should be. I'm lucky to have a wide network of amazing people, and Judy's practical suggestions have helped me think strategically about them. Best of all, Judy is generous in spirit with her own network and encourages you to be too; if you're not authentic and open, don't bother. Highly recommended.

Must-read guide for building strong relationships and connecting people to each other

I heard about Judy Robinett’s book, How to Be a Power Connector, when she was a guest on the I Love Marketing podcast. Judy delivered such a wealth of actionable ideas during the interview that I clicked over to Amazon and ordered her book before it was over. If she delivered this much useful information in just an hour, I was confident that much more awaited me in her book. And I was right. In fact, I was astonished at the comprehensive, yet simple, system she maps out in her book.
Even if you don’t aspire to be an over-the-top power connector like Judy, her book contains absolutely the best approach I’ve seen for helping you think strategically about forming alliances with others. An often-repeated theme throughout the book is to adopt a “giver” mindset. She advises readers to seek first how you can add value, value, value and more value to others before asking for anything. Adopting this mindset has totally changed the way I think about people I’m connected with and how I structure my emails and conversations. The results are consistently positive.
Every bit of her advice is brilliant, reflecting 25 years of practice and refinement. Throughout the book, she provides examples of how she has implemented her own system over the years. She's ingrained these skills to the point that she automatically looks for ways to connect people with others who can help them solve their most pressing problem or need.
The core idea is 5+50+100. You make a list of all your current connections and then organize the top 155 into 3 power circles. The TOP 5 circle is composed of the individuals closest to you, usually close family, friends and business associates. The KEY 50 are friends and associates you can call on for help or advice—and they know they can do the same with you. For the VITAL 100, include people from a wide variety of locations, roles and “ecosystems.”
Judy provides all the details for preparing, connecting, engaging, providing value and deepening these relationships. She explains exactly how to build a robust network that’s deep, wide and diverse. It’s all there, and because of that, I’ve been recommending this book to everyone I can.

I am an avid reader, working my way through around 100 books annually. These books cover predominately personal/professional development, literature award winners with a dash of easy reads in between. There are endless books on networking available, many of which I have studied. I find this book, "How to be a power connector" by Judy Robinett, to be THE blue print for networking. There are numerous takeaways and incredible valuable ideas/tips. The key messages are : how do you add value to connections and build meaningful connections. Secondly is clearly shows it is not a numbers game, but quality and robustness of relationships that matter most. I am delighted that I have studied Judy's book in this early stage of my consulting business to enable my business to grow and better my personal life journey. I strongly recommend Judy's book to everyone - it is a game changer. Lastly, the book is extremely well outlined for those with a systematic viewpoint who wants to learn quickly. If Jeff Weiner (LinkedIn's CEO), can transform How to Be a Power Connector's core principles into simple, seamless, and intuitive features for LinkedIn's 300+ million users, he will not only create the world's most powerful social network, but also Weiner and LinkedIn will change the world.
I'm twenty percent through How to Be a Power Connector, and I'm already convinced Judy Robinett's book and Seth Godin's What to Do When It's Your Turn (and It's Always Your Turn) will become my most important and actionable knowledge as I begin my next career as an early stage startup entrepreneur.
I usually write my Amazon reviews after finishing the entire book. This time, I made an exception. The 25 years of hard-earned wisdom and talent Judy abundantly shares in How to Be a Power Connector are that important. Also, Inc. Magazine selected How to Be a Power Connector as The Number 1 Business Book of 2014.
I've arrived at the sobering realization my networking skills are deficient. I've done some things well. But, I'm quickly learning I haven't been strategic in assessing, prioritizing, systematizing, and adding value to my business network on a consistent and regular basis.
Thank goodness for Judy's generosity and ability to teach. My gut instinct informs me Judy's book will forever change my life. Invest in yourself by buying and studying her book. I believe How to be a Power Connector will change your life too.

Judy Robinett is someone who both believes in giving unto others AND actually walks her talk. She is generous with her know-how and amazingly knowledgeable about a lot of things. What a great combination.
When I heard that she was writing a book, I knew it would be filled with great ideas but little did I know that she would share her insider secrets to being a networking rockstar. This is the book you wish you had when you were 20 - one that teaches you a critical life skill that will both help your career and assure you have a well-lived life. Judy breaks down the exact thinking and tactics she uses to create a titanium network of contacts that has let her achieve what others only dream about. Yes, it takes some hard work, but using her techniques you can be sure you are doing the RIGHT work in the RIGHT room with the RIGHT people. No more wasted time and energy and frustration.

5+50+100 Building a Strong and Profitable Network for Business

If you are new to business or a seasoned networker you will find much value in this book. Great real-life stories and examples to help you understand the principles of connecting, get over any fears you have and build a solid strategy that will work for you for years to come.
More than one hidden gem on connecting with the right people and groups in the start-up funding world of venture capital, Angel Investing and Crowdfunding. I recommended this book to the book club of my local coworking space, and it was a hit!
I have the audio and the hardcover and will be revisiting often. Judy also provides great resources on her site to help you get going.

This is a great guide. One of the best business books written lately and on this topic in particular. Robinett presents a master class in how to connect and network with a strategy that emphasizes reciprocity, authenticity, shared values and integrity. Part of this is about making a difference in the world. The keen thing about her strategy is that ti will work for students just out of school, millenials wanting to do their first start-up, corporate managers and it's particularly useful to those of us who are natural introverts. Now, at last, a system that helps with the anxiety that often accompanies my when I walk into an unfamiliar room. Well worth the read, a great addition to my business bookshelf and one I have already recommended to friends.

Judy does a great job at getting to the point and hitting a home run. I believe everything say shes in this book. Your network is net worth. Treat it as such. I do a horrible job at keeping up with people and this book made me sit down, create a list and give me the steps to keep in contact. There is so much information packed into this book it's worth the buy, trust me.
I would recommend this book to everyone of any career or age. I WISH I had read this book in college and definitely starting my first job. I have lost contact with so many influential people over my career it makes me sick. This book will immediately get you back on track and building your net worth.

Judy Robinett is the real deal. Her resume is jaw-droppingly impressive, and the tone of her writing is generous and eminently practical. It took me a long time to read her book,not because I found it tedious (far from it), but because I was highlighting every - other - sentence. It is *packed* with concrete advice, all of which I definitely plan to implement. Thank you, Judy Robinett. Bless you for the kindness that shines throughout this book. And thank you thank you for the detailed, practical advice I will put into action!

This is clearly one of the best books that I have read within the last 10 years! Judy doesn't just tell you what to do in this sensational book, she shares with you how to do it! It is a book for anyone looking to figure out how to raise the level of their communication with others and how to make your best relationships work best, at the highest level and with mutual benefits for all!

How to Be a Power Connector is one of, if not the best, book on networking. I read it on a recommendation from a colleague. The reason I give it such a high rating is that it has a complete system for being an effective networker backed up by specifics and examples that are helpful. The author walks you through a series of steps to be more effective and does so with precision and a laser like focus that is based on being of service to others, not simply transactional. Go get it!

There are books that are fabulous and books that change our lives, How to be a Power Connector is one of the latter. How does a book change our life? By providing information we didn’t have before, or didn’t have in a certain way before, and then inspiring us to do something with that information immediately and always. Books that espouse the importance of relationships seem to be everywhere. Where “Power Connector” is different is that it offers a strategy for thinking about relationships, presents innovative ways to craft and sustain relationships (such as relationship mapping) and infuses authenticity and heart into the process. My first act in becoming a power connector myself is to encourage everyone I know to read this book; my second act is to start working my way through every suggestion. Judy Robinett is the mentor, guide and teacher missing in many of our lives. Get this book now!

I stumbled across Judy Robinett's book one day while milling around in the Business section at Barnes & Noble - the title was intriguing and since I was at B&N to do some business planning and brainstorming, the subject of how to build a powerful network of relationships just happened to be top of mind. Now Bob Burg's wonderful book Endless Referrals had always been the gold standard to me in terms of how to build and cultivate a network - and I was pleasantly surprised to find that Judy's book actually took many of the same principles and expanded upon them...really, in my mind, took it all to a different space.
The fact that Judy is both warm and caring - people-oriented - but also highly systematic, intentional, and detailed, makes for a beautiful combination of sensibilities and creates a clear pathway for effective action. So if you already see the importance of building a network - all the benefits to your life, career or business - but you are unclear on how to do it, this book will really open your eyes and give you the tools you need to be successful.

This book clearly describes the recipe for success in networking with successful people. It out lines a very clear plan of not only how many to connect with; who to connect with; how to connect with them; and how to also create amazing value from your network. The book not only walks you through the plan and details of how to do it, but also provides charts and schedules of how to implement your plan. This books is the best investment book on the market today in my opinion, because the return is so valuable. I really like the simplicity and plain language the book was written in. The 5-50-100 connections is described in a way anyone can implement this. I wished I had read something like this 20 years ago, it would have changed my career. I am going to make this a must read for my children.

MUST BUY! This is by far one of the best networking books I've ever read. Judy does a great job at going into depth about the social psychology of building and nurturing relationships. To be success, one must learn how to collaborate, share, and give in order to get. Are you asking "How can I help you?" at your events and networking mixers? If not, then you should read this book and see how by asking this simple phrase, doors will open up for you.
Networking is the easy part. The hard part is knowing what to do after getting someone's business card and contact, especially the 'follow up'. Judy lays it all out for you and gives you many ideas, examples, and strategies on how to become a Power Connector like her. This was very insightful.
If you are considering buying this book, Buy It Now. You'll be glad you did. Imagine yourself having more connections, contacts becoming business partners, and lifelong friends. It is true, Your Network is really Your Networth! Judy coaches you through this mind shift in thinking. Not many people realize this fact. Its not what you know, but also who you know.
Every college graduate should have this book as their last course before they enter the real world. I meet so many MBA students and business people, they have no clue how to harness the power of their rolodex and networks. Their current mental state is always 'me me me' where it should be 'share, collaborate, and we all become successful together'. To be great and to do great, its all about "WE" and "US" not "I".
I have read many books on networking and Judy did a superb job. I will be referring to her book for life and recommending it to friends, family and partners. I've never written an amazon review before, and this is how strongly I believe in Judy Robinett's teachings and her sharing her life's work. I highly recommend buying and learning. I have to say I am skeptical when reading books about building relationship. As an introvert person I do not really have many connections before and I was having depression for some years. I needed to integrate back to the society after recovering, so the first think that I did was to talk to strangers as many as I can.
Miss Judy said in her book that we normally talk to strangers around 2-3% of the time and she keep emphasizing her readers to talk to stranger as small part of the strategic relationship, and I can verify that this true. At that time when I started to talk to stranger it was not strategic but to get to know more people at a personal level and be helpful, open minded, kind to them. Because of that I am able to get to know few venture capitalist and businessmen.
With a proper strategic planning as mentioned in her book, anyone is able to build connection right away. I managed to get few businessmen as my mentors because of her book. I am still new at building relationship but with Miss Judy wisdom I am able to learn and implement her advises immediately.
I highly recommend reading this book as it will help you in your future.
